PS5: nearly 100 million
Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5s between July and September, bringing the total to 97.9 million. That's fewer than the roughly 4 million it sold in the same months last year. Sony's CFO said new PS5 sales are slowing gradually, as expected this late in a console's life, while the PlayStation platform as a whole keeps growing. Reports also say supply will stay tight into next year, so don't expect stores to be overflowing with consoles this holiday.

Fewer consoles, more profit
Just like Nintendo yesterday, Sony made more money while selling fewer consoles. Game sales rose about 9%, and games and subscriptions earn far more per sale than hardware. Sony also said it offset rising memory chip costs with savings and price increases.

PS6: on schedule
The headline for fans: Sony says PS6 development is "progressing as scheduled" and expects solid progress next year. There's no release date and no price yet. Sony also said it has already secured the memory it needs for its planned console sales next year, which matters while RAM prices are climbing across the industry.
