The stock: up about 6% after hours
AMD closed the regular session at $483.90, up 3.65% on the day, then jumped to about $515 after hours, a gain of roughly 6.4%. That's a big change from last quarter, when AMD beat on everything and still fell about 8% because of its gross margin. The stock had dropped more than 20% over the past month, so expectations were low going in.
Data center is now the whole story
Data center revenue nearly doubled from a year ago to about $8.5 billion, comfortably above the roughly $8.2 billion analysts expected, and up from $6.7 billion last quarter. That's AMD's Instinct AI accelerators and EPYC server chips, sold to the companies building AI data centers. Data center is now well over half of AMD's revenue.

The fourth-quarter outlook is the big surprise
AMD expects fourth-quarter revenue of about $17 billion, plus or minus 3%, which would be growth of roughly 66% from a year ago. Analysts were expecting around $16.2 billion, so the guidance is about $770 million above consensus at the midpoint. AMD guided non-GAAP gross margin to about 55%.
That outlook matters most because investors have been asking whether AI spending is slowing. AMD's answer: not for them.
Who's using AMD's AI chips
AMD says Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle Cloud are already running models on its first Helios rack-scale AI systems, and the quarter included the launch of its MI450 accelerators. Lisa Su had said the Helios ramp would start at the end of Q3 and become "much more substantial" in Q4, which is what the $17 billion outlook reflects. AMD didn't break out how many systems it shipped.
PCs and gaming: mixed
The Client and Gaming segment brought in about $3.7 billion, down 8% from a year ago. Inside it, Client (Ryzen PC processors) grew 7% to $2.9 billion, helped by Ryzen laptop chips, which means the gaming side (Radeon graphics cards and console chips) shrank. That fits a year of higher PC part prices and console sales slowing late in the cycle.
Margins were in line: non-GAAP gross margin was 56%, matching AMD's guidance, which avoids a repeat of last quarter's margin disappointment.

What it means for gamers and PC builders
AI demand is soaking up chipmaking capacity and memory, which has pushed up prices for PC parts this year. AMD's strong AI numbers fit that picture: the money is in data centers, not in cheaper graphics cards. If you're planning a build, read should you build a gaming PC now, and see how the memory squeeze hit Intel last week.
My take
This is the report AMD bulls were waiting for. A beat on revenue, a beat on data center and, most importantly, a fourth-quarter guide that says AI demand is still accelerating. After Intel's crash last week and AMD's slide over the past month, a 6% jump shows how badly the market wanted good news from a chipmaker. The earnings call, where Lisa Su usually talks about AI chip customers and the MI450 ramp, will show whether the rally holds into Wednesday.
