This week, several tech sites reported that Nvidia had quietly removed the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 from its US online store. We checked Nvidia's US Marketplace ourselves on the evening of October 31: both Founders Edition cards are listed again, but marked "Out of Stock". Meanwhile, the cards you can actually buy cost far more than launch price. Here's what we know.

What we saw on Nvidia's US store (October 31)

  • RTX 5090 Founders Edition: $1,999, Out of Stock.
  • RTX 5080 Founders Edition: $999, Out of Stock.
  • RTX 5070 Founders Edition: $549, also Out of Stock.
  • What's in stock: partner versions of the RTX 5070, such as ASUS Prime models at $869.99 and $909.99, and an ASUS ROG Strix at $1,039.99. That's roughly $320 to $490 over the 5070's $549 price.

What was reported earlier this week

  • RTX 5090: reported missing from Nvidia's US Marketplace earlier in October.
  • RTX 5080: reported missing from the US Marketplace's GPU list on October 30, by VideoCardz, MIXED and others. At that point the RTX 5070 Ti was the top model listed.
  • Retail prices: on October 28, the cheapest RTX 5080 at major US retailers started at about $1,980, nearly double its $999 MSRP, according to reports.

So the listings appear to be back, but with no stock. Being listed at $999 doesn't help much if you can't add it to your cart.

Is the RTX 5080 discontinued?

Not confirmed. Nvidia has denied that the RTX 5090 is discontinued, and it hasn't commented on the RTX 5080. What's reported but not confirmed:

  • Memory shortage: one report blames a shortage of fast GDDR7 memory, and Nvidia using more of its top chips for AI and data-centre products. The same AI demand is behind the RAM price shock we covered this week.
  • A 24GB RTX 5080: rumours say a new 24GB version could replace both the current RTX 5080 and the RTX 5090. Nvidia hasn't announced anything.

What it means if you're buying

  • Don't pay $2,000 for an RTX 5080 in a panic. If a 24GB version is coming, today's 16GB card could look worse value soon.
  • Founders Edition cards sell out fast. If you want one at MSRP, check Nvidia's store often, because restocks don't last.
  • Look at AMD too. Radeon cards are an option if Nvidia prices stay this high, though AMD is also reported to be raising prices in November.
  • Check the whole build. With RAM this expensive, the GPU isn't the only part that has gone up.

My take

Listed but out of stock is almost the same as gone. Nvidia's own store shows the RTX 5080 at $999, but the only cards you can actually buy are partner models at hundreds over MSRP. I wouldn't pay nearly $2,000 for an RTX 5080 right now. Either grab a 5070 Ti or wait and see if the 24GB version is real. Would you pay double MSRP, or are you holding out?
