GTA 6 is going to need a lot of space. According to the PlayStation Game Size account, the PS5 version is about 210GB, roughly a third of an original PS5's usable storage. Pre-load starts November 12, so here's how much room you'll need and how to make space before then.
Last updated October 27, 2026. The size is reported, not yet confirmed by Rockstar or Sony.
How big is GTA 6?
- The PlayStation Game Size account on X reported on October 27 that the PS5 version of GTA 6 is about 210GB. Insider Gaming says it independently confirmed the figure.
- The same post lists the standard edition at $79.99 and the release time as midnight.
- Some earlier reports put it at around 204 to 205GB, so the final number may move a little.
- Rockstar and Sony haven't officially confirmed the size, and it's not clear whether it includes a day-one update.
- The Xbox Series X|S size hasn't been reported yet.

For comparison, GameSpot points out that it's about double the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's last game. It's one of the biggest console games ever.
How much of your PS5 it takes
A PS5 never gives you its full storage, because the system software uses part of it. Here's roughly what you can actually use:
| Console | Usable space | GTA 6 takes |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (original, 825GB) | about 667GB | about 31% |
| PS5 Slim (1TB) | about 848GB | about 25% |
So if your PS5 already has a few big games installed, there's a good chance GTA 6 won't fit without clearing space.
Key dates
- November 12: pre-load starts. If you pre-ordered digitally, you can download the game a week early. According to reports, codes from boxed editions can also be used to pre-load once redeemed.
- November 19: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Read everything we know about the release.
How to make room before November 12
- Check your free space: on PS5, go to Settings › Storage › Console Storage.
- Delete games you're not playing. Your saves stay on the console, and PS Plus members can also keep cloud backups.
- Clear old screenshots and video clips. Captured gameplay video can quietly take tens of gigabytes.
- Move PS4 games to a USB drive. PS4 games can be stored and played from an external USB drive, which frees the internal storage for PS5 games like GTA 6.
- Add an M.2 SSD if you need a lot more room. The PS5 supports PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe drives (with cooling) in its expansion slot. Check Sony's official list of requirements before you buy, since not every drive is guaranteed to work.
Watch out for fake "GTA 6 downloads"
Every time a big game gets close, fake "early download" files start circulating. Some of the fake GTA 6 files online have been reported as malware. The only safe way to get GTA 6 early is the official pre-load on your console from November 12.
My take
210GB is huge, but honestly not shocking for a game this size. GTA V was massive for its time too. The real problem is the original PS5's small usable space: one GTA 6 and a couple of Call of Duties and you're full. If you're planning to play on day one, clear the space this weekend, not on November 12 at midnight. How much free space do you have right now?
