Coming up

  • AMD: reports today, November 3, after the US market close. We'll add it here the same evening.
  • Nvidia: expected later in November.

The big theme: AI spending

This season, investors cared less about growth and more about how much companies are spending on AI data centers and when that pays off. Alphabet and Amazon both grew fast but were punished for heavy spending and weak cash flow. Alphabet vs Microsoft shows the split clearly: Microsoft's cloud growth convinced investors, Alphabet's didn't.

Memory shortage hits PCs and gamers

AI is buying up memory chips. SK Hynix's record quarter and Intel's crash are two sides of the same story: memory makers win, PC makers lose, and RAM gets more expensive. Apple also guided a lower gross margin because of memory costs. If you're planning a PC build, read should you build a gaming PC now.

Gaming inside the numbers

Microsoft's Xbox hardware revenue fell 14%, another sign of the console's decline, while Apple and Alphabet don't break out gaming. Follow our gaming news for what it means for players.

My take

Beating estimates isn't enough this season. Apple beat and still fell on China and margins; Amazon grew AWS 39% and still dropped. The market wants proof that AI spending turns into profit, and until it gets that, expect big swings on every report.
