Nier: Automata just got a lot bigger, by accident. After a Steam update on November 6, the PC version suddenly asks for around 366GB of space instead of the usual 50GB. Square Enix has confirmed it's a bug and says it's working on a fix. Here's what happened and how to avoid downloading 300GB you don't need.

The short version
| Game | Nier: Automata (PC, Steam) |
| Normal size | About 50GB |
| Size after the update | About 366GB |
| The update | November 6, adding Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean language support |
| Official status | Square Enix is investigating the cause and working on a fix |
| Workaround | Uncheck the DLC in the game's Steam properties |

What went wrong
The update itself was small: it added three new languages. But after it went live, Steam started showing a huge install size for the game. According to players and early coverage, the bug seems to add the full game's file size to each piece of DLC, so Steam counts the base game several times over. The result is a download and storage requirement more than seven times bigger than it should be.
Square Enix confirmed the problem and said it is investigating the cause and working to resolve it. Reports are mixed right now: some players say the size is back to normal on their end, while others still see the inflated number when they install or update.

How to avoid the 366GB download
Square Enix's suggested workaround is to turn off the DLC in Steam for now:
- Right-click Nier: Automata in your Steam library and open Properties.
- Go to the DLC section.
- Uncheck the listed DLC.
- Let Steam recalculate the download. It should drop back to a normal size.
Once the fix is out, you can tick the DLC boxes again. If you haven't updated yet, it's worth holding off until Square Enix confirms the patch, especially on a small drive or a slow connection.
Is your save safe?
Nothing so far suggests the bug touches save files. It's a download and storage problem, not a gameplay one. Still, if you're mid-playthrough, a quick backup of your save folder never hurts before any big update.

Running out of space anyway?
This is a bug, but big installs are becoming normal. GTA 6 is expected to need well over 200GB on its own (here's our GTA 6 file size breakdown), and modern games keep growing. If your drive is always full, a 2TB NVMe SSD is the easiest upgrade for both PC and PS5.

My take
Nier: Automata is a great game, but even 2B can't justify 366GB. The good news is that this is clearly a mistake, not a new normal, and the workaround is simple. Uncheck the DLC, wait for the patch, and you're fine. Did your Steam show the giant number too, or did you dodge it?
