How the expansion campaign works

  • You need to own Vessel of Hatred. With it installed, a new quest called Rekindled Faith appears.
  • The story follows on directly from the base game's epilogue, so finish that first if you want it to make sense.
  • The campaign has four chapters and an epilogue, around 30 main quests in total.
  • Like the base game, you can only skip it on later characters after one character has finished it.
  • The expansion also adds the Spiritborn class, a jungle warrior who draws power from guardian spirits. You do not need to play Spiritborn for the campaign. Any class works.

Quest names below are checked against several guides. Some step details inside each quest are kept general on purpose, because the expansion has been patched several times and small objectives can change.

Chapter 1: The Art of Salvaging What Remains

  1. Rekindled Faith: go to the Cathedral of Light in Kyovashad and watch the cutscene. Speak with Olya.
  2. A Fist of Fire: a short story quest. Right after Rekindled Faith you talk with Urivar and listen to his lecture. Remember him; you will meet him again.
  3. Pursuit of Justice: follow the trail and defeat the Enkindled Judicator, the first boss of the expansion.
  4. A Magpie in Flight: travel to the port of Gea Kul, find Raheir, destroy the Hollow Defilements and inspect the crumbling bridge.
  5. Enmity Rising: the last quest of the chapter. It takes you on toward Nahantu.

Boss: Enkindled Judicator

This is a warm-up boss for the expansion. Treat it like any big campaign fight: learn its wind-ups in the first minute, step out of every marked area, and hit it between attacks. If you beat Lilith, this fight should not stop you.

Chapter 2: The Wound Heals, The Pain Lingers

This is the longest chapter, with ten quests. You arrive in Nahantu, meet the mercenaries and reach Kurast.

  1. Thrust Into the Dark: follow Eru, escort Raheir and find the Den, a hidden base for mercenaries.
  2. The Hand Remembers the Blade: clear the Dark Passageway and use the rope to leave. After this, Raheir becomes available as a Mercenary, a companion who fights beside you.
  3. A Path Laid in Blood and Unknowing Survivors: push into the jungle. In Unknowing Survivors you search the Kurast Docks and the Madman's Archive.
  4. Reaching Through the Veil, A Flickering Light and The Heart of All Rot: the hunt for a way to help Neyrelle. Expect corrupted jungle areas and tougher packs.
  5. To Kurast and the following quests: enter the city of Kurast. The chapter ends with Fundament of Faith.

About mercenaries

The expansion lets you hire mercenaries from the Den. One fights beside you, and you can also pick a second one as a "reinforcement" who joins in on certain triggers. In the campaign they are mostly a safety net. Hire whoever you like. They gain Rapport (a kind of bond level) as you play together, which unlocks more of their skills. Their exact strength changes with patches, so do not plan your build around them.

Chapter 3: Darkening Clouds

In this chapter the group finds a possible way to free Neyrelle from Mephisto's influence. It means seeking out an old spirit power, Ah Bulan.

  1. Darkening Clouds and Forgotten Gods: learn what the people of Nahantu believe and where the answer might be.
  2. Across the Threshold, A Deeper Sickness and Fragile Blessings: travel deeper into the jungle. Mephisto's corruption is everywhere.
  3. Reunion and Living Memory: big story beats with Neyrelle.
  4. Burning Crusade: head to the Burned Knight's Camp to look for Eru, then fight down into the main encampment and confront Urivar.

Boss: Urivar

Urivar is the best fight of the middle chapters. He uses fire and throws spears that track you.

  • Never stand still. The tracking spears punish you if you plant your feet.
  • Move in a wide circle and hit him when he finishes an attack.
  • Fire resistance helps a little, but moving well helps a lot more.
  • Clear any knights that join the fight before they box you in.

Chapter 4: False Prophets, Fallen Saints

The goal now is to find the tomb of Akarat, the founder of the Zakarum faith, and seal the Soulstone with Mephisto inside it for good.

  1. The Way Out is Through: the final push begins.
  2. Perspective: find and inspect the three Faces of Akarat, giant statues around the town. One is to the west, one to the east, and one is beneath the town. They point you to the tomb.
  3. In His Footsteps: follow the path they reveal.
  4. All Good Things: the big boss quest. There is a Ritual Brazier puzzle on the way. Then you face the Harbinger of Hatred, and you defeat it with the help of Akarat's light.
  5. Catharsis, To Walk a Different Path and Presaging Fate: the story wraps up. These are mostly cutscenes and short walks.

Final boss: Harbinger of Hatred

This is the final boss of the expansion campaign. The key mechanic is Akarat's light: you beat the Harbinger with its help, not by damage alone. Watch for the light and use it when the game prompts you.

  • Read the on-screen prompts. The game tells you what the light does when it matters.
  • Like Lilith, the boss has big telegraphed attacks. Dodge them first, damage second.
  • Kill adds quickly, especially if they block your path back to the light.
  • If you keep dying, lower the difficulty. The campaign does not reward you more for doing it on a high setting.

Epilogue: Deeds of a Champion

The expansion ends with one long epilogue quest, Deeds of a Champion. It wraps up the expansion story and points toward what comes next. Follow the markers and enjoy the cutscenes. After it, Nahantu's side content and the expansion's endgame activities are all open to you.

A big open world and lots of cutscenes: a good gaming headset really brings Diablo IV's sound design to life.

Tips for this part

  • Hire a mercenary early. Raheir is free once Chapter 2 gets going, and an extra body helps a lot in the jungle.
  • Unlock every waypoint in Nahantu. The region is big and the jungle paths wind a lot.
  • Do not rush past Nahantu side quests. They give renown and keep your gear up to date for the later chapters.
  • Stay mobile against Urivar and the Harbinger. Both punish players who stand still.

My take

I enjoyed Nahantu a lot. The jungle looks great, Kurast brings back old Diablo 2 memories, and Urivar is a villain you love to hate. The story is shorter and more focused than the base game, which I think suits it. Did you play the expansion as Spiritborn or stick with your old class?
