How to start the Lord of Hatred campaign
- You need to own Lord of Hatred. Every edition also unlocks Vessel of Hatred, so you get both.
- The story follows on directly from the end of Vessel of Hatred. On a character that finished it, the first quest, Solace Beyond Sight, appears in your quest log. Track it and follow the marker.
- You do not have to finish the older campaigns first. When you make a new character, you can change its campaign state and jump straight to Lord of Hatred. The story will make more sense if you played Vessel of Hatred, though.
- The campaign has five chapters and a lot of quests. Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 are the long ones. This page covers Chapters 1 and 2. Part 7 covers the rest.

Paladin and Warlock in short
The expansion adds two classes. You do not need either for the story. Any class can play it.
- Paladin: a holy melee fighter and the tanky, easy-to-learn pick. Its class mechanic is a set of Oaths, where you commit to one path that shapes your playstyle.
- Warlock: a shadow and fire caster who binds demons. It juggles two resources and uses a Soul Shard system. It has more to learn but a high ceiling.
Class details like resource names and Oath effects have shifted with patches, so check a current class guide before you plan a build.
Skovos in short
The whole campaign takes place in the Skovos Isles, home of the Amazons. The capital and main hub is Temis. Guides name islands and areas such as Philios, Lycander, Skartara, Celestia, Atanos and Athulua. Waypoints unlock as the story moves on, so grab each one when you pass it.
Chapter 1: The False Prophet
Seven quests. You learn of a weapon on Skovos that can stop Mephisto, cross the sea and reach Temis.
- Solace Beyond Sight: find Lorath near your start point in the Kotama Grasslands and follow him to the Yshari Archive. Talk to him, interact with Neyrelle, then check the three objects near her. Speak with Lorath again to finish.
- Last of the Horadrim: meet Lorath in Backwater. He gives you a Horadric Seal and a charm, which unlocks the new Talisman system. Equip them, then board the ship at the Backwater Docks. The quest ends after the voyage cutscene.
- Hatred's Wake: on the ship, kill the merfolk and destroy the Briny Debris covering the ship's guns. Fight down through the ship. A big crab, the Calamitous Crab, ambushes you in the lower area. Then go to the top deck for the boss, the Hateborn Abomination. Beat it and talk to Lorath.
- Crown of the Twin Seas: you land on Skovos. Talk to Lorath and find the entrance to Temis. The quest ends as you walk into the city.
- Between Heaven and Hell: find the Temis Promenade. Eavesdrop on Queen Adreona through the cracked wall in the alley, then look for the Hands of Akarat and follow one into the Temis Sewers.
- Subterranean Secrets: push through the sewers and the Sunken Catacombs. Cultists open a portal and summon a Galvanized Mauler. Kill it, then head back up to Temis.
- The Queen and the Saint: the chapter's last quest. Follow the markers in Temis and watch the story play out. It unlocks Chapter 2.
Boss: Hateborn Abomination
A huge sea serpent that climbs onto the ship. It does not hit very hard, but it is aggressive and punishes you for standing in marked areas. Keep moving along the deck, step out of every telegraph and hit it between attacks. Its health bar has checkpoints that give you health potions, so do not panic if you drink early. Clear the Calamitous Crab's adds first in the earlier fight if they pile up.
Chapter 2: To Walk With Two Shadows
This is the biggest chapter, with around 26 quests. You hunt for the pieces of Lilith's Blade across the islands. Do it over several sessions if you need to. The main quests, in order:
- What's Yet Unseen, In the Shadow of Another, She Sleeps Within You: you set out to find Lilith. Early steps include fighting pirate ambushers and breaking the salt-iron anchors on Philios, a trip into the Mind's Eye, and lighting a signal brazier.
- Tipped Scales, Quelling Hatred, The Hellborne Grove, Along the Crimson Trail.
- What Was Given, Mother's Guidance, A Devil in the Garden, Hands Stained Red.
- Seed of Hatred, Those Who Remain, A Blade's Weight, In Rathma's Footsteps.
- The Path of Riddles: in The Blind Holt. You pick up the Hilt of Lilith's Blade.
- A Door Was Opened, then The Soil, The Seed, The Fruit, which ends with the Memory of Inarius boss.
- The Rising Tide, Threadbare Legacy, Wounded Souls, Scattered to the Winds, The Queen's Castaways.
- The Hateborn Sea: destroy the Seaborn Shrines and kill the Drowned around them.
- Breaking the Storm: follow Tharra, use the Amazon Ballista to fire a rope and cross it, climb down the broken ship's mast and enter the Foundering Caverns. Kill the Behemoth of Atanos and pick up the Edge of Lilith's Blade.
- Glint of Light: the last quest of the chapter. It leads into Chapter 3.
Boss: Memory of Inarius
The hardest fight in this part, and a long one. Watch for these moves:
- Spear throw: he throws his spear and teleports to it. Dodge the throw, then be ready to hit him where he lands.
- Light beams: rotating beams sweep a wide area. Move in close to him, where it is safer.
- Chains: after you take a chunk of his health, he turns invulnerable. Stand in the marked chain area until the arena's chains bind him, then go back to damage.
- Mirrors: later he makes mirrors that fire in several directions. Keep your dodge ready and do not stand in a straight line from them.
The fight has a lot of bright flashing light. If that bothers you, be ready for it.
Boss: Behemoth of Atanos
A big, slow brute summoned by cultists. Its main threat is a ground pound with a shockwave. Dash back out of it, then get behind the boss to hit it. It calls in minions that rush you. Kill those first, then go back to the boss. Stuns and freezes fill its stagger bar fast.
If you love the art, The Art of Diablo IV book is packed with concept art of Lilith, Inarius and Sanctuary.
Tips for this part
- Use the Talisman early. Last of the Horadrim gives you a seal and a charm. Equip them right away and swap in better charms as they drop.
- Unlock every waypoint. Chapter 2 sends you all over the islands, and backtracking on foot is slow.
- Read the boss's tells. Inarius and the Behemoth both have clear wind-ups. Spend the first minute just watching and dodging.
- Lower the difficulty if you are stuck. The campaign gives no extra story reward for doing it on a hard setting.
My take
Skovos is a big change of scene after the jungle, and I liked seeing the Amazon home at last. Chapter 2 drags a little in the middle, but the Inarius fight is a real highlight once you learn the chains. Which new class did you take into Skovos, Paladin or Warlock?
FAQ
How do I start the Lord of Hatred campaign?
Own the expansion, then track the quest Solace Beyond Sight. It starts with Lorath in the Kotama Grasslands. On a new character, you can set the campaign state to jump straight to Lord of Hatred.
Do I need to finish Vessel of Hatred first?
No, you can skip ahead. But the story continues straight from Vessel of Hatred, so playing it first helps a lot.
How many chapters does Lord of Hatred have?
Five. Chapter 3 is a single quest, while Chapters 2 and 4 are long. Most players need several sessions for the whole thing.
How do you beat Memory of Inarius?
Dodge his spear throw and hit him where he teleports, move in close during the light beams, and stand in the chain area when he goes invulnerable so the chains can bind him.
