Quest names below are checked against several guides. Step details inside some quests are kept short on purpose, because patches can change small objectives.

Chapter 3: Sins and Secrets

This chapter is just one quest, but it is an important one. It starts once you finish Glint of Light.

  1. Faith and Failings: meet Tharra in Atanos.
  2. Travel to Celestia and attend Akarat's sermon. Watch closely; this is where the "false prophet" story comes to a head.
  3. Escape to the Celestia Observatory. That ends the chapter.

Chapter 4: When Sun and Moon Converge

The second long chapter, with 19 quests. Here you get the Horadric Cube and prepare for the final fight. The quests, in order:

  1. Fate Laughs at Us All: enter the Observatory and talk to Tharra. You get a dialogue choice with Queen Adreona, then Oracle Cyra steps in. Your choice does not change the story or gameplay, so pick what you like.
  2. On the Hunt, A Withering Curse, The Void, Embers at Twilight.
  3. The Land of Fire, Some Fall, Some Jump, A Still-Beating Heart, The Needle's Path.
  4. Doorways to the Distant Past, then four short quests in a row: The Scribe, The Watchman, The Luminary and The Initiate.
  5. Horadrim: reach the Chamber of Gates and beat the Horadric Guardian, Keeper of the Cube. This opens the way to The First Vault and gets you the Horadric Cube, which you use in the story to infuse the pieces of Lilith's Blade.
  6. Death: speak with Lilith and defend her from Mephisto's demons. You fight Failing Light and Falling Darkness before facing Mephisto in a story scene.
  7. One Eye Closes, One Eye Opens: back at The First Vault, kill the lava golems on the way, then go to Tyrael at the vault door. He seals it. Talk to him to finish.
  8. The Fools: ends with a boss fight against Adreona.
  9. Smothered Flame: speak with Oracle Cyra, defend her in the Observatory, then destroy the siege engines. This closes Chapter 4.

Boss: Horadric Guardian, Keeper of the Cube

  • The Guardian puts up a ward that blocks all damage. Look at the sigil shown inside the ward, then use the Horadric Vessel with the matching sigil. The ward drops and you get a damage window.
  • Between wards it uses melee hits and a dark flurry. Circle the arena to avoid them.
  • When it sends a wall of flame across the room, standing behind the Guardian helps you avoid it.
  • The fight repeats this loop until it dies. It gives no special loot; the reward is the way forward.

Boss: Adreona

  • Magma rocks keep falling during the fight. Stand behind Tyrael, who shields you from them, and fight from there when you can.
  • She is fast and hits hard. Dodge her big swings, then punish her recovery instead of trading blows.
  • After you beat her once, she starts a second phase. Tyrael's barrier helps you survive it.
  • Some players got stuck with Adreona at very low health and unable to die. If that happens to you, let her kill you and restart the fight. Blizzard has worked on this bug, so you may never see it.

Chapter 5: Breaking the Cycle

Four quests take you to the end.

  1. The Age of Hatred: the run-up to the final push.
  2. Delivering a Promise: break the shield wall inside the Temple of Union.
  3. Lord of Hatred: enter the Pools of Creation at the Birthplace, search for Akarat and confront him. Then the final boss fight begins. Afterward, speak with Tyrael and escape the Pools of Creation.
  4. A New Beginning: meet Tyrael at Light's Bastion. This is the last quest of the campaign.

Final boss: Mephisto, Lord of Hatred

A three-phase fight. Make sure your potions are topped up and your gear is current before you go in.

Phase 1

  • Fire starts falling before his health bar even shows. Move right away.
  • Dodge his fireballs, rings and beams, then hit him in the gaps. Do not stand still.

Phase 2: the Heart of Hatred

  • You move to a smaller arena, and Mephisto strips your skills from your bar. They show up as orbs around the room. Pick them up to get your skills back. Check the minimap to find them.
  • Watch out for blood pools, spikes, claw sweeps and faces on the edges that fire blood missiles.
  • Around half health, a whirlpool tries to drag you in. Use a movement skill to get out.

Phase 3

  • He mixes most of his earlier attacks with fire and lightning and stops pausing between them.
  • Hit and run. Ranged classes should keep distance; melee classes should go in after each big attack and back out before the next.
  • Keep a defensive skill ready. This is where careless players die.

The harder Echo of Mephisto fight in the endgame is a different version with one-shot mechanics. This guide is for the story fight only.

After the campaign

  • Temis becomes your main hub. The Horadric Cube is available there for crafting.
  • War Plans unlock. You set them up at a command table in Temis. They let you chain endgame activities, like Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons, into one plan with modifiers that change the rewards.
  • The level cap is now 70, with Paragon after that.
  • Details of the endgame change each season, so check current notes before you plan your grind.

Tips for this part

  • Read the ward sigil first. Against the Horadric Guardian, guessing the vessel wastes time. Look, then click.
  • Hug Tyrael against Adreona. The falling rocks do more damage over the fight than she does.
  • Grab skill orbs fast in Mephisto phase 2. Get your main damage and movement skills back first.
  • Keep a movement skill on your bar. The whirlpool and phase 3 both punish slow characters.

My take

Chapter 4 is long, but it pays off with the Cube and a strong run of fights. Mephisto feels like a proper final boss, and losing your skills in phase 2 is a fun twist the first time. Did the ending land for you, or did you want more from Mephisto?

FAQ

Who is the final boss of Lord of Hatred?

Mephisto, Lord of Hatred. You fight him in the Pools of Creation in the Chapter 5 quest Lord of Hatred.

How do I get my skills back in the Mephisto fight?

In phase 2 he removes your skills and they appear as orbs in the arena. Pick up the orbs to get them back. The minimap shows where they are.

How do I beat the Horadric Guardian?

When it raises a ward, match the sigil inside the ward to the right Horadric Vessel and use it. That drops the ward so you can deal damage. Repeat until it dies.

What do I unlock after beating Lord of Hatred?

War Plans, the Horadric Cube in Temis and the rest of the expansion endgame. Exact activities and rewards depend on the current season.
