What is Legacy of Atlantis?

It's a modern reimagining of the game that started it all: Lara Croft's 1996 hunt for the pieces of the Scion of Atlantis, through tombs in Peru, Greece, Egypt and finally the lost city itself. Instead of a straight remaster, the team has rebuilt the adventure with new visuals and modern gameplay systems in Unreal Engine 5, while keeping the classic journey and locations fans remember.

According to Crystal Dynamics, the game also fits into the wider Tomb Raider timeline, connecting to the Survivor trilogy (Tomb Raider 2013, Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider). Previews describe a more confident, "unfettered" Lara who has put the survivor era behind her.

Will it be too hard?

The original was famous for its tricky jumps and unforgiving puzzles. Legacy of Atlantis offers separate difficulty settings for puzzles and combat, so you can make the fights easier while keeping the puzzles challenging, or the other way around. Crystal Dynamics has said it doesn't want the game to scare off players who think classic Tomb Raider is too difficult.

The AI controversy
Legacy of Atlantis hasn't been without debate. Generative AI was used during development, which drew criticism from some fans. Crystal Dynamics' experience director Jeff Adams has said all content in the final game is human-crafted; when Game Informer pressed on whether any AI assets made it into the engine, a PR representative ended the question. Expect that topic to come up again in reviews.
