Warhammer Community has revealed two new Battle Group boxes for The Horus Heresy: the Heavy Assault Battle Group and the Vanguard Assault Battle Group. Each one is a big Legiones Astartes force in a single box, with dozens of Legionaries, a character or command squad and armour. Here's everything inside.

Heavy Assault Battle Group

The slow, tough option, built around Mark III "Iron Armour" Legionaries:
- 20 Mark III Tactical Squad Legionaries
- 10 Mark III Breacher Squad Legionaries
- 5 Mark III Legion Command Squad Legionaries
- 6 Cataphractii Terminators with volkite chargers and power mauls
- 1 Land Raider Explorator/Carrier
That's 41 infantry plus a Land Raider. Warhammer Community pitches it as the box for players who want to be "the immovable object".
Vanguard Assault Battle Group

The fast-moving force, built around Mark VI Legionaries:
- 20 Mark VI Tactical Squad Legionaries
- 10 Mark VI Assault Squad Legionaries
- 1 Legion Praetor with power sword
- 1 Contemptor Dreadnought
- 1 Deimos Pattern Rhino
- 1 Deimos Pattern Predator Battle Tank
Warhammer Community describes it as a rapid deployment force led by an experienced Praetor, with half of the 20-strong Tactical Squad able to ride in the Rhino.
Which one should you pick?
- Want a tough, grinding army? Heavy Assault: Terminators, Breachers and a Land Raider to carry them.
- Want speed and armour support? Vanguard Assault: jump-pack Assault Squad, a Rhino, a Predator and a Dreadnought.
- Starting a new Legion? Either box is a big chunk of an army in one go, and both work for any Legion you want to paint.
Price and release date
Warhammer Community hasn't listed prices or a pre-order date in this reveal yet. Battle Group boxes like these usually save money compared with buying the kits separately, and big boxes often sell out, so keep an eye on the weekend pre-orders.
My take
These are proper army-in-a-box deals. Forty-plus Legionaries in one purchase is exactly what Heresy players want, because the game eats infantry. I'd lean Vanguard for the Predator and Contemptor, but if you love Terminators, Heavy Assault is hard to beat. Which one are you grabbing?
