Good light and a bit of magnification make a bigger difference to your painting than almost any new brush. Eyes, edge highlights and freehand all get easier when you can actually see them. Here's what to look for in a magnifying lamp for miniatures, and which type suits which painter.

What to look for

  • Daylight-white light: paint colours look right under neutral white light. Warm yellow bulbs make blues and greens look wrong.
  • Brightness: a bright lamp that you can dim is better than a weak one.
  • Lower magnification is more comfortable: the stronger the magnifier, the closer you sit and the smaller the area you see. Most painters use a lens for checking details, not for every brushstroke.
  • How it mounts: a clamp arm keeps the desk clear, a stand needs no table edge, and a floor lamp suits painting in an armchair.

Best for a painting desk: clamp swing-arm lamp

If you paint at a desk, a clamp lamp is the classic choice. It grips the table edge, swings over the model when you need it and folds away when you don't. The NUEYiO 10X magnifying lamp with desk clamp arm is this type. For a bigger desk, the NUEYiO 3-section swing arm lamp reaches further and comes with 12X and 30X lenses; it was $39.99 with about 4.5 stars from 110 reviews.

No clamp needed: lamp with a stand

Painting on a glass desk, a thick table or a shared kitchen table? A lamp with its own base avoids the clamp problem. The NUEYiO 2-in-1 magnifier with light and stand was $37.99 with 5 stars from 28 reviews. The NUEYiO 12X square magnifier with light ($39.99) gives a wider, rectangular view.

For armchair painters: a floor lamp

Some painters work with a tray in an armchair, or simply want nothing on the desk. A floor lamp stands beside you instead. The NUEYiO 2200-lumen magnifying floor lamp was $73.99 with about 4.5 stars from 158 reviews.

For quick checks: a handheld magnifier

A lit handheld magnifier won't help while you paint, because you need both hands, but it's handy for checking a finished model, reading tiny transfers or inspecting a second-hand miniature. The NUEYiO handheld magnifier with light is a rechargeable 30X magnifier with 20 daylight LEDs; it was $16.99 with about 4.5 stars from 629 reviews.

My take

A ring magnifier lamp sits on my own painting desk, and it's one of the upgrades I'd least want to give up. If you paint at a desk, get a clamp lamp; if you can't clamp, get one with a stand. And don't overdo the magnification: being able to see the whole model matters more than seeing one rivet very large. What light do you paint under?
