Commander Dante is the Chapter Master of the Blood Angels and one of the oldest living Space Marines outside a Dreadnought: more than eleven centuries old, hidden behind a golden death mask in the face of Sanguinius, and now Regent of half the Imperium. He saved Armageddon, made a last stand at Baal, crossed the Rubicon Primaris in his old age and still carries a prophecy that says his greatest battle is yet to come. Here is his whole story.

Who is Dante?

Dante has led the Blood Angels for over a thousand years. He has fought in more wars than most Imperial worlds have existed, and he is one of the most respected warriors in the whole Imperium. Other Chapter Masters ask his advice. Generals and governors fear disappointing him.

He is also very, very tired. Dante has watched his brothers die for eleven centuries. He has fought the same enemies again and again. And like every Blood Angel, he carries the curse of his Primarch's blood. What keeps him going is duty, and a prophecy he has never been able to forget.

To ordinary people of the Imperium, Dante is something close to a saint: a golden warrior who drops from the sky to save worlds in their darkest hour. To his own Chapter, he is the living link with their lost father, and proof that a Blood Angel can carry the curse for a lifetime and stay true.

A boy from Baal Secundus

Like all Blood Angels, Dante began life as a tribal boy on Baal Secundus, one of the two radiation-blasted moons of Baal. Its scattered tribes live hard, short lives among deserts and mutants, and the Chapter tests their young men in brutal trials to find the few worthy of becoming Space Marines.

Guy Haley's novel Dante tells this part of his story: the boy called Luis, his survival on a dying world, his selection by the Chapter and his long climb through its ranks. It shows a warrior who was never the loudest or the most reckless, but who was always steady, clever and fiercely loyal.

Rise to Chapter Master

Dante served the Chapter for centuries before he took command. He fought as a line warrior, a sergeant and a captain, and he earned a reputation for calm in the chaos of battle, rare among the hot-blooded Blood Angels. When he became Chapter Master, more than a thousand years before the current age, he inherited a Chapter that was proud, artistic, deadly and quietly afraid of itself.

Since then he has led the Blood Angels through countless crusades against Orks, Tyranids, traitors and the forces of Chaos. Under him, the Chapter's rule has been one of discipline: fight like angels, control the beast within, and never let the Imperium forget who their Primarch was.

The golden mask

In battle, Dante wears a golden death mask made in the likeness of Sanguinius, the angelic Primarch of the Blood Angels who died fighting Horus at the end of the Horus Heresy. To his warriors, the mask is a reminder of their father. To their enemies, it is the face of an angel of death coming for them.

Dante carries the Axe Mortalis, an ancient relic power axe, and the Perdition Pistol, an inferno pistol that can melt through tank armour at close range. He fights with a jump pack, dropping from the sky into the thick of the enemy just as Sanguinius once did on his wings.

Around him fight the Sanguinary Guard, the Chapter Master's golden, winged bodyguard. Each wears a gold death mask of his own and carries ancient blades and weapons. Seeing Dante and his Guard descend together is one of the most famous sights in the Imperium.

The curse of the Blood Angels

Every Blood Angel carries two flaws in his gene-seed. The Red Thirst is a craving for blood that the warriors must constantly fight to control. The Black Rage is worse: in battle, some Blood Angels relive the last moments of Sanguinius, believing they are their Primarch fighting Horus. They become unstoppable and lost, and they are sent into battle as the Death Company, never to return.

Dante has resisted both for over a thousand years. That alone makes him a legend among his brothers. But he knows the curse is always there, waiting.

The Chapter's whole culture is built around this struggle. Chaplains watch for the first signs of the Rage, Sanguinary Priests guard the gene-seed, and the Blood Angels pour their passions into art, music and sculpture to keep the beast quiet. Dante, as Chapter Master, carries the weight of every brother lost to the curse.

Armageddon

When Ghazghkull Thraka invaded Armageddon in the Second War for Armageddon, Dante led the Blood Angels to the planet's rescue. Together with the Ultramarines, the Salamanders and the stubborn defenders of Hades Hive under Commissar Yarrick, the Blood Angels helped break the Ork Waaagh!. It is one of Dante's most famous victories.

Armageddon also gave the Chapter one of its strangest legends. During the fighting, the Librarian Calistarius fell to the Black Rage and was buried in the ruins of a collapsed building. Days later, he clawed his way out, the Rage mastered and his old self gone. He called himself Mephiston, and he has served Dante as Chief Librarian ever since.

The Blood Angels would return to Armageddon in the Third War, and it would cost them dearly: the famous Captain Erasmus Tycho fell to the Black Rage there and died fighting with the Death Company.

The Devastation of Baal

Dante's darkest hour came at home. The Tyranid Hive Fleet Leviathan descended on the Baal system, the homeworld of the Blood Angels. Dante gathered the Blood Angels and their many successor Chapters for a last stand, knowing they were heavily outnumbered.

The call went out to every son of Sanguinius, and they came: the Flesh Tearers under Gabriel Seth and many more, even the excommunicated Knights of Blood. Before the swarm reached Baal, Dante also led a bold campaign to slow it down in the nearby Cryptus system, buying time at a terrible price.

The Tyranids consumed world after world. Baal Prime fell. The swarm reached Baal itself, and the Blood Angels fought on, ready to die defending their home at the fortress-monastery, the Arx Angelicum. Then, at the last moment, the galaxy changed: the opening of the Great Rift tore through space, and reinforcements sent by the returned Primarch Roboute Guilliman arrived, bringing new Primaris Space Marines. Baal survived, wounded but unbroken. Exactly what broke the hive fleet at the end is still left a little mysterious in the lore.

Regent of Imperium Nihilus

The Great Rift split the Imperium in half. On the dark side, cut off from Terra and the light of the Astronomican, billions of worlds were left alone. Roboute Guilliman needed someone to hold that side together, and he chose Dante. As Regent of Imperium Nihilus, the old Chapter Master now carries the defence of half the Imperium on his shoulders.

It is a crushing burden for a warrior who already felt his age. But Dante took it, as he has taken everything else, because no one else could. He has had to rebuild his own shattered Chapter with Primaris reinforcements, keep the successor Chapters together and try to coordinate the defence of countless worlds that can barely send a message through the warp storms.

Crossing the Rubicon Primaris

For years Dante was one of the most famous "firstborn" Space Marines, made long before the Primaris existed. That changed in 2023, when Games Workshop revealed that Dante had crossed the Rubicon Primaris, the dangerous surgery that turns a veteran Space Marine into a Primaris warrior. Many brave Marines die in the attempt. Dante survived it, at over a thousand years old.

He came out of it bigger, stronger and wearing new golden armour, ready to fight on for the Imperium in its new age. His Chief Librarian Mephiston had already made the same crossing. For a warrior who thought he was near the end of his road, it was a second life.

The prophecy

Blood Angels legend says that Dante will one day stand beside the Emperor in His final hour, protecting Him as Sanguinius once did. Nobody knows if it is true. But the prophecy is part of why Dante refuses to rest, and why his Chapter believes he still has one great battle left to fight.

Famous figures in Dante's story

  • Sanguinius: the Great Angel, Primarch of the Blood Angels, whose face Dante wears into battle.
  • Mephiston: the Lord of Death, Chief Librarian, once Brother Calistarius, who mastered the Black Rage on Armageddon.
  • Brother Corbulo: the Sanguinary High Priest, keeper of the Red Grail, searching for a cure for the Flaw.
  • Astorath the Grim: the High Chaplain who travels to the successor Chapters to grant the Emperor's Peace to those lost to the Rage.
  • Lemartes: the Guardian of the Lost, a Chaplain who fell to the Black Rage but still leads the Death Company.
  • The Sanguinor: a mysterious golden winged warrior who appears in the Chapter's darkest hours, then vanishes.
  • Erasmus Tycho: the scarred Captain of the 3rd Company, once seen as a possible successor to Dante, who fell to the Rage on Armageddon.
  • Captain Karlaen: Captain of the 1st Company, the Archangels, leader of the Chapter's Terminator veterans.
  • Gabriel Seth: the fierce Chapter Master of the Flesh Tearers, who answered Dante's call at Baal.
  • Roboute Guilliman: the returned Primarch who sent help to Baal and named Dante Regent.
  • Commissar Yarrick: the Hero of Hades Hive, Dante's ally in the Second War for Armageddon.

Character and beliefs

Dante is noble, patient and deeply sad. He believes in the Emperor, in the memory of Sanguinius and in the Blood Angels' duty to be the angels the Imperium needs. He is not a hothead: where many Blood Angels fight with fury, Dante fights with cold control, choosing his moment and then striking hard.

His great enemies are the Tyranids, who nearly destroyed his home; the traitor heirs of Horus, who killed his Primarch; and the curse inside his own Chapter. His great hope is that the Blood Angels can endure long enough for the prophecy to come true.

Dante on the tabletop

Dante is a fast, hard-hitting leader for a Blood Angels army: he drops in with his jump pack, leads a unit into combat and cuts down enemy characters with the Axe Mortalis. With Codex: Blood Angels coming in spring 2027, now is a good time to start a Blood Angels force. This year's Blood Angels Christmas Battleforce also includes Dante.
