Commissar Sebastian Yarrick is the Hero of Hades Hive and the Saviour of Armageddon: a stubborn old officer with a bionic eye and an Ork warboss's power klaw, who stopped Ghazghkull Thraka's Waaagh! when everyone else had given up, and has hunted him across the stars ever since. Left for dead, rebuilt by the Space Wolves and now back on Armageddon in 2026 with a brand new miniature, the old man simply refuses to stay down. This is his whole story, from the walls of Hades to his latest return.
Lore page, last updated November 5, 2026. Summarised in our own words from codexes, campaign books, Black Library novels, Warhammer Community articles and community wikis. Yarrick's story has been told and retold since the late 1980s, and some details (like exactly how his last duel with Ghazghkull went) differ between sources. Where they do, we say so. Who is Yarrick?
In the Imperium, a commissar is a political officer attached to the Imperial Guard. Their job is to keep soldiers brave and loyal, by example if possible and by force if needed. Most commissars are feared by their own troops. Yarrick is different: soldiers love him, because he never asks them to do anything he wouldn't do himself, and he is always in the front line.
He is also something rare in Warhammer 40,000: a normal human, with no superhuman powers, who became a legend just by refusing to give up. That is why fans love him so much. He is not a Primarch or a Space Marine. He is an old man with a bad temper, a long memory and absolutely no intention of letting the Orks win.

The early years
Official background says little about Yarrick's childhood. His younger days are told mostly in David Annandale's Black Library novels, which show a sharp, principled commissar learning that courage spreads through an army faster than fear.
By the time of the Second War for Armageddon, Yarrick had served for decades. He was old, respected and due for a quiet retirement. Fate had other ideas.
Armageddon: the world he would save
Armageddon is a huge hive world and one of the Imperium's great industrial centres. Its vast hive cities, such as Hades, Helsreach, Tartarus, Acheron, Infernus and Volcanus, pour out tanks, guns and soldiers for the wider Imperium. Between the hives stretch the poisonous ash wastes, and on the far continent lie thick, deadly jungles. The planet is famous for its tough Armageddon Steel Legion regiments, who fight in gas masks and greatcoats from fleets of armoured transports.
The Hero of Hades Hive
When Ghazghkull's Waaagh! hit Armageddon in the Second War for Armageddon, it went badly for the Imperium. The planet's leaders made terrible decisions, armies were wiped out, and hive city after hive city came under attack.
Much of the blame falls on the planet's ruler, Overlord Herman von Strab, a proud and incompetent governor who at first refused to take the threat seriously and wasted his best troops. When his choices led to disaster, von Strab fled rather than face judgement. Yarrick would never forgive him.
Yarrick was an old commissar who was supposed to be heading into retirement. Instead he found himself in charge of the defence of Hades Hive. With a battered army, he turned the hive into a fortress and fought the Orks for every street and every building. The Orks threw wave after wave at the walls, and Yarrick held.
His stand bought the time the Imperium needed. Space Marine Chapters arrived, including the Blood Angels under Commander Dante, alongside the Ultramarines and the Salamanders, and together they broke the Waaagh!. Ghazghkull fled. Yarrick, the old man who should have retired, was now a hero across the Imperium.
The arm, the klaw and the Bale Eye
During the fighting at Hades, Yarrick faced the Ork warboss Ugulhard, who cut off his arm. Yarrick killed him anyway. He then took the warboss's huge power klaw and had it refitted for his own body, so he could tear through Orks with one of their own weapons. To the Orks, that is both terrifying and deeply impressive.
He also lost an eye in battle and replaced it with the Bale Eye, a bionic eye that can fire a short laser blast. Many Orks honestly believe Yarrick can't be killed, and that his glare alone can strike them dead. For an Ork, there is no greater compliment.
This is where the Ork legend of "Old Bale Eye" comes from. Orks believe what they believe very strongly, and to many greenskins Yarrick is less a man than a kind of grim spirit of the enemy: the one human who keeps coming back.

Between the wars: Piscina and the hunt
Ghazghkull resurfaced on the world of Piscina, where his forces clashed with Imperial defenders, including the Dark Angels. The Orks were beaten back again, but the fight showed something worrying: Ghazghkull was learning. He was testing his enemies, trying new tactics and remembering what had worked.
Captured at Golgotha
Ghazghkull learned from his defeat. Years later, on the bleak world of Golgotha, where he planned to build a vast arms factory for his next invasion, he crushed an Imperial army and captured Yarrick, whose armoured force had tracked him there. Accounts say Yarrick spent a long time as a prisoner of the Orks. Then Ghazghkull let him go.
To Ghazghkull, a truly great enemy is worth more alive than dead, because he makes every war exciting. Yarrick saw it differently. Being spared by an Ork was the worst insult of his life, and he swore he would see Ghazghkull dead. Their rivalry has driven both of them ever since.
Golgotha also cost Yarrick his famous Baneblade super-heavy tank, the Fortress of Arrogance, which became one of the most famous tanks in Imperial history. The battles on Golgotha have been told in several versions over the years, and some older details have quietly dropped out of current lore, so treat the finer points with care.
The Third War for Armageddon
When Ghazghkull returned to Armageddon with an even bigger Waaagh!, Yarrick was waiting. He knew how Ghazghkull thought better than anyone in the Imperium, and he helped organise the defence of the whole planet. The Third War for Armageddon became a vast, grinding conflict.
This time the Orks came with a real plan. Asteroids packed with warriors smashed into the planet, war machines rolled across the ash wastes, and huge Ork fleets fought in orbit. On the Imperial side, millions of Guardsmen stood alongside dozens of Space Marine Chapters. The Black Templars under High Marshal Helbrecht fought in the sky and on the ground, and the Chaplain Grimaldus became a hero defending Helsreach Hive. The Salamanders, Blood Angels and many more joined the fight, and the war spread from the hives to the jungles and the ash wastes.
When Ghazghkull left the war, Yarrick didn't stay to celebrate. He went after him. The hunt for Ghazghkull became his life's work, taking him far from the world he saved.

The long chase
For years Yarrick followed Ghazghkull through warzone after warzone, always one step behind. Every time he cornered the warboss, Ghazghkull slipped away, often heading toward an even bigger fight. The old man pushed his body far past what any normal human should survive, held together by bionics, medicine and sheer stubbornness.
Icaria: the duel and the fall
The chase finally ended on the world of Icaria. Here Yarrick, fighting beside the Space Wolves, cornered Ghazghkull for a final reckoning. Warhammer Community's account describes a battlefield torn apart by artillery and a fierce Space Wolves ice storm that pinned the warboss down for a moment, before he broke free.
Then came the duel. Sources tell it slightly differently: some say Yarrick landed real blows, even striking the warboss with his own klaw, while others focus on how Ghazghkull's huge klaw crushed the old man's bones. All agree on the ending. Ghazghkull won, and then he walked away, leaving Yarrick broken on the ground.
For a few years after that, Yarrick's fate was a mystery. Games Workshop even played with the question in its own articles, asking whether the old commissar might finally be dead. Fans argued about it endlessly.
Rebuilt by the Space Wolves
He wasn't dead, of course. A Space Wolves Wolf Priest found what was left of Yarrick and carried him away. The old man woke aboard a Space Wolves strike cruiser with a rebuilt skull and limbs that barely worked, held together by a heavy frame of augmetics made by the Sons of Russ.
Recovery took years. Yarrick spent them out of sight, learning to fight again in a body that was more machine than ever. Meanwhile, the galaxy changed around him: the Great Rift split the Imperium, and the Imperium believed its Hero of Hades had fallen. Ghazghkull believed the same.
Armageddon: The Return of Yarrick (2026)
In 2026, Games Workshop brought Yarrick back in a big way. The campaign expansion Armageddon: The Return of Yarrick went up for pre-order on 25 April 2026 and released on 9 May 2026, together with Yarrick's first new miniature since 2000.
The story sees a fresh Ork invasion crash into Armageddon: the Speedwaaagh! of Wazdakka Gutsmek, the most famous Speed Freek warboss in the galaxy. Official previews explain his reasoning in true Ork style: he has heard that Ghazghkull has a powerful new teleporter, and he reckons he can trade for a ride through it into Imperium Nihilus, the war-torn half of the galaxy beyond the Rift. The price: krumping Armageddon. His bikers, buggies and trukks tear into an Imperial defence that is nowhere near ready.
Into that chaos steps Yarrick. Sent back by the Space Wolves, the old man returns to the world he saved twice before and sets out to rally the defenders and call in the reinforcements Armageddon needs. The same release wave also brought new Imperial characters to the table, including Commissar Thenia Graves and Inquisitor Kroyle.
The expansion is presented as a set of books covering the lore of the new war, campaign material and new Detachments, with a heavy focus on tanks and other big vehicles. Shortly afterwards, Warhammer 40,000's new edition launched in June 2026 with a launch box called Armageddon, Space Marines against Orks, so the old war-world is very much back at the centre of the setting.

An old man who won't stop
Yarrick is very old for a human, and his body is held together by bionics and sheer stubbornness. He keeps fighting anyway, on Armageddon and far beyond it. Games Workshop has kept his story alive in new artwork, novels and an animated short, and he still appears on new battlefields, sometimes against enemies far stranger than Orks.
Famous figures in Yarrick's story
- Ghazghkull Thraka: the Prophet of the Waaagh! and Yarrick's arch-enemy, who spared him at Golgotha and again at Icaria.
- Ugulhard: the Ork warboss who took Yarrick's arm at Hades Hive, and paid for it with his life and his klaw.
- Herman von Strab: the vain Overlord of Armageddon whose blunders nearly lost the Second War, and who fled instead of facing justice.
- Commander Dante: Chapter Master of the Blood Angels, whose warriors helped break the Waaagh! at Armageddon.
- Mephiston: once the Blood Angels Librarian Calistarius, he emerged from the rubble of Armageddon with the Black Rage mastered.
- High Marshal Helbrecht: leader of the Black Templars crusade in the Third War.
- Chaplain Grimaldus: the Black Templar who led the desperate defence of Helsreach Hive.
- Wazdakka Gutsmek: the Speed Freek warboss whose Speedwaaagh! hits Armageddon in the 2026 story.

Character and beliefs
Yarrick is a believer. He trusts in the Emperor, in duty and in the ordinary soldier. He has little patience for nobles, cowards or officers who waste lives, and that has earned him enemies inside the Imperium as well as outside it.
He is also a student of the enemy. Unlike many Imperial commanders, Yarrick takes Orks seriously, and that is exactly how he kept beating them. His greatest weakness is the same as his strength: he cannot let go of the hunt for Ghazghkull.
Yarrick on the tabletop
Yarrick leads Astra Militarum armies as a character model, with his power klaw raised and his storm bolter ready. He is a great choice for any Imperial Guard army, and a must-have if you are building an Armageddon force or playing a narrative campaign against Ghazghkull's Orks.
