Who is Marneus Calgar?

Calgar is the most famous Chapter Master in the Imperium. He leads the Ultramarines, the Chapter of Roboute Guilliman, and also rules Ultramar, the realm of worlds around Macragge, as its lord. He is a warrior, a general and a statesman in one, the living example of the Codex Astartes. His bionic eye and his heavy gauntlets have made him the face of the Space Marines for decades of Warhammer 40,000.

The First Tyrannic War: the Battle of Macragge

Calgar's defining battle came when Hive Fleet Behemoth, the first great Tyranid swarm, fell on Ultramar. Calgar led the defence of Macragge himself. The Ultramarines First Company died to the last man holding the northern polar fortress, and Calgar was gravely wounded leading the fight in the south. Macragge survived and Behemoth was destroyed, but the Chapter needed years to rebuild. The names of the fallen Terminators are honoured on Macragge to this day.

Centuries of war

After Macragge, Calgar led the Ultramarines across the galaxy: against Orks, Tau, Chaos and the Tyranids again on worlds like Ichar IV. He rebuilt his Chapter, kept Ultramar strong, and became known for his will. Calgar fights at the front and rarely needs to say anything twice.

Guilliman returns

When the Great Rift tore the galaxy in half, Guilliman woke from his ten-thousand-year stasis. For Calgar, who had kept watch over his gene-father's body for centuries, it was the fulfilment of a lifelong prayer. Guilliman went to lead the Indomitus Crusade, and Calgar defended Ultramar against Chaos in his absence.

Crossing the Rubicon Primaris

Badly wounded again, Calgar chose to undergo the dangerous surgery that turns an old Space Marine into a Primaris Marine, known as crossing the Rubicon Primaris. Many veterans die in the process. Calgar survived, and came back bigger and stronger in new Gravis armour. A Chapter Master of centuries, he now leads the next generation of Ultramarines.

Lord of Ultramar

Calgar is not just a soldier. As Lord Macragge he governs the five hundred worlds of Ultramar from the Fortress of Hera, keeping the realm Guilliman built strong and loyal. His Chapter follows the Codex, but Calgar knows when to bend it, a skill that marks the best commanders of the Adeptus Astartes.
