The Blood Angels are the most tragic and most beautiful Space Marine Chapter in Warhammer 40,000. Sons of the winged Primarch Sanguinius, they are artists, nobles and sky-borne warriors in red and gold, and they carry a terrible secret in their blood: a thirst they must fight every day, and a rage that can turn any one of them into a doomed echo of their dying father. This is their full story, from the deserts of Baal to the Devastation and beyond.

Sanguinius: the angel of Baal

Like every Primarch, Sanguinius was stolen from the Emperor's laboratory as an infant and flung across the galaxy. His capsule came down in the Baal system, on the moon Baal Secundus, a desert world poisoned by ancient nuclear wars. Its human survivors lived in small tribes, hunted by mutants and battered by radiation storms.

A tribe called the Blood found the child. He grew at incredible speed, and he had something no other Primarch had: a pair of great white wings. Some thought him a mutant and wanted him dead, but he won them over. As a young man he led the Blood against the mutant hordes and freed the tribes of Baal. To them he was not a monster but an angel sent from the sky.

When the Emperor finally reached Baal, Sanguinius knelt to him at once, as if he had always known who his father was. He was given command of the IXth Legion.

The IXth Legion and its hidden flaw

The IXth Legion that Sanguinius inherited had a dark reputation. Its warriors were savage in close combat, and something in their gene-seed made some of them hungry for blood. Allies found them frightening, and the Legion was kept at a distance by many of its peers.

Sanguinius changed that. He gave the Legion his own ideals of nobility, sacrifice and beauty, renamed it the Blood Angels, and began recruiting from the people of Baal. The Legion became famous for its gorgeous art and armour, its noble bearing and its devastating assaults from the sky. But the flaw never went away. The Primarch and a handful of his trusted officers kept it secret, because they knew what the rest of the Imperium might do to a Legion with a curse in its blood.

The Great Crusade

During the Great Crusade, the Blood Angels fought across the galaxy, very often beside the Luna Wolves (later the Sons of Horus). Sanguinius and Horus were the closest of brothers, and when Horus was named Warmaster, Sanguinius was among his strongest supporters. Many believed that if Horus had not been chosen, the title would have gone to the Angel.

Sanguinius also had a heavy gift: he could glimpse the future, including his own death.

The Horus Heresy

Signus Prime

When Horus turned traitor, he did not try to win Sanguinius over at first. Instead he sent the Blood Angels into a trap in the Signus Cluster. There the Legion faced not rebels but daemons, led by the Bloodthirster Ka'Bandha, a greater daemon of Khorne. The daemons played on the Legion's hidden thirst, and many Blood Angels were swept away by a red frenzy. Sanguinius fought Ka'Bandha and was beaten down, but he rose, rallied his sons and won. The Legion escaped, scarred, knowing Horus had betrayed them. This story is told in James Swallow's novel Fear to Tread.

Imperium Secundus

Cut off from Terra by the Ruinstorm, the Blood Angels reached Ultramar, where Roboute Guilliman had founded Imperium Secundus, a back-up empire in case Terra had fallen. Sanguinius reluctantly agreed to stand at its head. When it became clear that the Emperor still lived, he gladly gave up the title and led his Legion home.

The Siege of Terra and the death of the Angel

In the Siege of Terra, Sanguinius commanded the defence of the Eternity Wall spaceport and fought in the very heart of the battle. He faced Ka'Bandha again and this time cast the daemon down, but he was badly wounded.

At the end, when Horus lowered the shields of his flagship, the Vengeful Spirit, the Emperor led a final assault aboard. Sanguinius reached Horus first. The Warmaster offered him one last chance to join him. The Angel refused, and Horus killed him. Moments later the Emperor arrived, saw his favoured son dead, and destroyed Horus, though he was mortally wounded and ended up on the Golden Throne. Sanguinius's death became the defining moment of his Legion, and of everything that came after.

The Red Thirst and the Black Rage

Every Blood Angel carries two curses in his gene-seed, known together as the Flaw.

  • The Red Thirst is a craving for blood. It sharpens in battle and must be held down by willpower, faith and ritual. A Blood Angel who loses the fight with it becomes little more than a beast.
  • The Black Rage is worse. It grew out of their Primarch's death. A warrior seized by it relives Sanguinius's last moments, believes he is the Angel himself facing Horus, and fights with no thought of survival. There is no known cure.

The Death Company

Blood Angels who fall to the Black Rage are not cast out. Their brothers paint their armour black, marked with red saltires, and gather them into the Death Company. Led by Chaplains, they are sent into the very heart of the fighting, where their fury can do the most good. Very few ever return: the Death Company fight until they die, and their brothers see this as a kind of mercy, a final chance to serve with honour.

Sanguinary Priests and the Red Grail

The Blood Angels' Apothecaries are called Sanguinary Priests, and they are more than battlefield medics. They recover the gene-seed of the fallen, watch their brothers for signs of the Flaw, and guard the Chapter's blood rites. They wear white shoulder pads to mark their calling.

Their leader is the Sanguinary High Priest, the keeper of the Red Grail, one of the Chapter's holiest relics, a chalice tied to the blood of Sanguinius. The current High Priest is Brother Corbulo, who has given his life to one hope: finding a cure for the Flaw.

Baal, Baal Prime and Baal Secundus

The Blood Angels' home is the Baal system:

  • Baal: the main world, a harsh place that holds the Chapter's fortress-monastery, the Arx Angelicum, with its great halls, statues and shrines to Sanguinius.
  • Baal Secundus: the radiation-scarred desert moon where Sanguinius was found. Its tribes are the Chapter's recruiting ground.
  • Baal Prime: the other moon, later the site of some of the bloodiest fighting of the Devastation of Baal.

Young aspirants from the tribes face brutal trials to prove they are worthy. Those chosen receive the gene-seed of Sanguinius, which changes them into tall, handsome warriors who carry their father's beauty, and his curse.

The Second Founding and the successor Chapters

After the Heresy, Guilliman's Codex Astartes broke the Legions into Chapters of about a thousand warriors. The Blood Angels' successors are often called the Sons of Sanguinius, and all of them share the Flaw to some degree. Among the Second Founding Chapters were:

  • The Flesh Tearers: founded by Amit, one of Sanguinius's fiercest captains. They are the most savage of the Sons of Sanguinius and the closest to losing themselves to the Thirst.
  • The Angels Encarmine and the secretive Angels Sanguine.

Later and other successors include the Angels Vermillion, the Blood Drinkers, known for following the Codex more closely than their kin, and the Lamenters, an unlucky Chapter famous for their part in the Badab War. The Knights of Blood fell so far to their curse that the Imperium declared them excommunicate, yet they still came to fight for Baal in its darkest hour.

How the Chapter is organised

The Blood Angels broadly follow the Codex Astartes, with ten companies of around a hundred warriors, but with their own famous additions.

On the battlefield, the Blood Angels love jump packs. Dropping onto the enemy from above, as their Primarch once did on his wings, is the heart of their way of war.

Great wars of the 41st millennium

Armageddon

In the Second War for Armageddon, Dante led the Blood Angels to help break Ghazghkull Thraka's invasion, fighting alongside Commissar Yarrick's defenders of Hades Hive. It was there that a Librarian named Calistarius fell to the Black Rage, and emerged as Mephiston. Armageddon would later cost the Chapter one of its great captains, Erasmus Tycho, in the Third War.

The Devastation of Baal

The Chapter's darkest modern hour came when Hive Fleet Leviathan, the largest Tyranid invasion yet, swept towards the Baal system. Dante called the Sons of Sanguinius home, and Chapters from across the galaxy answered, even the excommunicated Knights of Blood. Together they made a last stand.

Defensive lines fell one after another: on Baal Prime, the defenders were wiped out, with the Knights of Blood holding the line so others could escape. The swarm finally reached Baal itself, and Dante prepared to die at the Arx Angelicum.

Then the galaxy changed. The Great Rift tore open, and the Tyranid fleet was broken. Exactly what destroyed most of Leviathan at Baal is still something of a mystery in the lore, but the Blood Angels survived. Baal was saved, at a dreadful price, and the Chapter and its successors were left terribly weakened. The story is told in Guy Haley's novel The Devastation of Baal.

Primaris reinforcements and the Regent

With the Blood Angels and their successors bled almost dry, the returned Primarch Roboute Guilliman sent help: new Primaris Space Marines made from Sanguinius's gene-seed, enough to rebuild the shattered Chapters. Guilliman then named Dante Regent of Imperium Nihilus, the half of the Imperium cut off by the Great Rift. Meanwhile, Baal is slowly rebuilt.

Famous Blood Angels

  • Sanguinius: the winged Primarch, the Great Angel, who died facing Horus so his father could win.
  • Commander Dante: Chapter Master for more than a thousand years, one of the oldest living Space Marines, who fights behind the golden Death Mask of Sanguinius.
  • Mephiston: the Lord of Death, Chief Librarian, once Brother Calistarius. Buried in the rubble of Armageddon while lost to the Black Rage, he clawed his way out with the curse mastered, the only Blood Angel known to have done so. He has since crossed the Rubicon Primaris.
  • Astorath the Grim: the High Chaplain, called the Redeemer of the Lost. He travels between the successor Chapters to give the Emperor's Peace to warriors who are lost forever to the Black Rage.
  • Lemartes: the Guardian of the Lost, a Chaplain who fell to the Black Rage but kept enough control to lead the Death Company. Between battles he is kept in stasis.
  • Corbulo: the Sanguinary High Priest and keeper of the Red Grail, searching for a cure for the Flaw.
  • The Sanguinor: a mysterious golden winged warrior who appears in the Blood Angels' darkest hours, fights, and vanishes. Nobody knows who or what he really is.
  • Erasmus Tycho: the scarred Captain of the 3rd Company, seen by many as a possible successor to Dante, who fell to the Black Rage on Armageddon and died with the Death Company.
  • Captain Karlaen: the Captain of the 1st Company, the Archangels, and leader of the Chapter's Terminator veterans.
  • Gabriel Seth: Chapter Master of the Flesh Tearers, a brutal warrior trying desperately to stop his Chapter sliding into the Thirst.

Culture: art, beauty and tragedy

The Blood Angels are warriors, but they are also artists. They paint, sculpt, write and build, and their fortress-monastery is filled with masterpieces. All of this is part of how they fight the Flaw: by holding on to what is beautiful and noble in themselves, they resist the beast inside.

They remember Sanguinius with deep love and deep grief. Every Blood Angel knows that the same blood that makes him strong could one day destroy him. They are angels and monsters at once, and they know it.

Enemies and rivals

  • Khorne and his daemons: above all the Bloodthirster Ka'Bandha, who has hunted the sons of Sanguinius since Signus Prime and still wants their blood.
  • The Traitor Legions: especially the heirs of Horus, the killer of their Primarch.
  • The Tyranids: Hive Fleet Leviathan nearly destroyed Baal, and the hatred runs deep.
  • Orks: the Blood Angels have fought Ghazghkull's hordes on Armageddon more than once.
  • Suspicion within the Imperium: the Inquisition and others have long watched the sons of Sanguinius, fearing what the Flaw might make of them.

How to paint Blood Angels

  1. Prime with a red spray, or basecoat Mephiston Red over a dark or grey primer.
  2. Shade the recesses with Carroburg Crimson for a deep, rich red (Agrax Earthshade gives a darker, grittier look).
  3. Highlight the edges with Evil Sunz Scarlet, then a fine Wild Rider Red on the sharpest edges.
  4. Paint the gold (Retributor Armour, shaded with Reikland Fleshshade) on Sanguinary Guard, trims and winged blood drops.
  5. For the Death Company, use Abaddon Black armour with grey edge highlights, and add red saltires and blood drops for contrast.
  6. Sanguinary Priests get white shoulder pads, which stand out beautifully against the red.
