Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial Fists, was the Emperor's Praetorian: the unbending builder who turned the Imperial Palace into the greatest fortress in the galaxy and commanded the defence of Terra against Horus in the darkest hours of the Heresy.

Who was Rogal Dorn?
Dorn was the wall. Honest, stubborn and tireless, he was the Primarch who never broke, never bent and never lied. He was a master of fortification and siegecraft, and a commander who would hold a position until the last man fell. When the Heresy came to Terra, the Emperor trusted Dorn above all others to keep the throneworld standing.
Inwit: the ice world
Dorn's capsule landed on Inwit, a cold, dark world in the Inwit Cluster. Unlike many Primarchs, he did not grow up among savages. Inwit was the heart of a disciplined, space-faring empire. Dorn was found and adopted by its ruling house, and he grew into a natural heir. He learned war, engineering and government, and eventually became ruler of the empire himself.
Found by the Emperor
When the Emperor reached the Inwit Cluster, Dorn met him at the head of a powerful fleet. Instead of fighting, he pledged his empire and his fleet to his father. Among the gifts was the Phalanx, a moon-sized fortress-ship that became the Imperial Fists' flagship and still serves the Chapter ten thousand years later.
The Imperial Fists
Dorn took command of the VII Legion, the Imperial Fists, in their famous yellow armour. They were masters of siege warfare, both building fortresses and breaking them. His captains included Sigismund, the Legion's greatest swordsman, and later Fafnir Rann, a master of close assault. Dorn shaped them into a Legion that valued duty, endurance and pain as a path to strength.
Praetorian of Terra
Near the end of the Great Crusade, the Emperor sent Dorn home to Terra to fortify the Imperial Palace. Dorn turned the vast Palace into a fortress city of walls, bastions and gun lines. He did not know it, but he was building the battlefield of the greatest siege in human history.
The Horus Heresy
When news of Horus's betrayal reached Terra, Dorn wanted to take his Legion and strike back at once. Instead he was ordered to stay and defend the throneworld. Dorn became the effective commander of Terra's defence. He worked with Malcador the Sigillite and the Custodes to prepare for the Warmaster's coming, while the Heresy burned across the galaxy.
The Siege of Terra
When Horus arrived, Dorn met him first in the Solar War, a desperate battle across the solar system. Then came the Siege of Terra itself. For months, Dorn commanded the defence of the Palace against the traitor Legions, Titans and daemons. He was joined by Sanguinius and Jaghatai Khan, and together they held the walls even as Chaos poured in. When the Emperor teleported aboard the Vengeful Spirit, Dorn led the reinforcements that followed and found his father broken on the deck beside the body of Horus.
After the Heresy: the Iron Cage
The Heresy left a deep mark on Dorn. He clashed with Guilliman over the Codex Astartes and the breaking of the Legions, and very nearly refused to obey. During the hunt for the traitors he chased Perturabo and the Iron Warriors to a fortress world, where the Imperial Fists were trapped in a deadly siege known as the Iron Cage. The trap cost the Fists dearly, and Guilliman's Ultramarines had to come and relieve them.
The fate of Rogal Dorn
Dorn's end is a mystery. He led an attack on a traitor fleet near the Eye of Terror and never returned. Later, the Imperial Fists found an abandoned traitor ship. Inside, they found only Dorn's severed hand. The relic is kept by the Chapter, and the Imperial Fists believe their Primarch fell fighting.
Legacy: the Imperial Fists and their sons
After the Second Founding, the Imperial Fists split into several Chapters. The most famous are the Black Templars, founded by Sigismund as an endless crusade, and the Crimson Fists. Other successors include the Excoriators and the Fists Exemplar. All of them share Dorn's stubborn determination and love of a hard fight.
Sigismund, the first Templar
Of all Dorn's sons, Sigismund became the most famous. He was the Imperial Fists' greatest duellist and fought through the Siege of Terra with a reputation no traitor could match. After the Heresy, he refused to stop fighting. When the Legion was broken into Chapters, he took his warriors and founded the Black Templars, a Chapter on permanent crusade. Sigismund became their first High Marshal, and the Templars still carry his zeal and his hatred of the traitor, the witch and the alien today.
Dorn and his brothers
Dorn's bitterest rival was Perturabo, who hated him for being the Emperor's chosen builder while the Iron Warriors were wasted on endless sieges. Dorn's bluntness also offended Russ and Guilliman at times. But he was close to Sanguinius, who fought beside him to the end, and he never doubted the Emperor.
What kind of man was Dorn?
Dorn could not lie and found it hard to understand people who could. He was serious, practical and almost humourless, but deeply loyal. He felt every loss as a personal failure, and the Siege of Terra changed him: he came out of it harder and more haunted. To the Imperial Fists, he is the model of a soldier who stands firm when everything around him falls.
