Who is Corvus Corax?

Corax is the Primarch of shadows. Pale, black-haired and silent, he could move unseen even in a crowd, and he fought wars by striking where the enemy was weakest. He was also a revolutionary who hated tyranny, because he grew up as a slave. His story is about freedom, grief and the terrible price of trying to rebuild what was lost.

Origins on Lycaeus

Corax's capsule landed on Lycaeus, a mining moon used as a prison by the tech-guilds of the planet Kiavahr. The prisoners were worked to death in the mines. Corax was found and raised by the inmates, who saw him as a miracle. He learned everything they could teach him: engineering, history, politics and how to hide from the guards.

The uprising

As he grew, Corax planned a revolt. He trained the prisoners, built secret weapons and studied the guards' every move. When the uprising came, it was fast and total. Corax took the prison, then used Lycaeus's own mining charges and stolen ships to strike Kiavahr itself. The tech-guilds fell. Corax renamed the moon Deliverance, a symbol of everything he believed in.

Discovery by the Emperor

The Emperor arrived soon after the revolution was won. Corax agreed to join the Great Crusade only if the Emperor helped secure Deliverance's freedom, and the Emperor agreed. Corax took command of the XIXth Legion, which became the Raven Guard, and recruited from the freed prisoners of Deliverance.

The Raven Guard Legion

The Raven Guard fought like their father: in small strike teams, with surprise attacks, sabotage and decapitation strikes against enemy leaders. They wore black armour and moved like ghosts. Their officers included the veteran commanders Branne and Agapito, men who would lead the Legion through its darkest days. Corax himself, with his flight pack and claws, often struck the killing blow personally.

The art of the shadow war

Corax wrote his own rules for war, and they are still studied by the Raven Guard today. Never fight the enemy where he is strong. Learn everything about him before you strike. Kill his commanders, cut his supply lines and break his communications, so his army collapses on its own. Strike, then disappear before he can answer. These ideas came straight from the prison mines of Lycaeus, where Corax learned that a small force that cannot be seen is more dangerous than a big one that can.

This style made the Raven Guard very different from Legions like the World Eaters or the Iron Warriors. Where they won through brute force, Corax won with as little bloodshed as possible, often taking a world before its defenders knew they were under attack.

The Great Crusade

During the Crusade the Raven Guard won many quiet victories, taking worlds with few casualties by killing their rulers or crippling their defences before the main war began. Corax was a reluctant warrior in some ways: he joined the Crusade to protect freedom, not to build an empire, and he worried about how the newly conquered worlds would be ruled. Among his brothers, he was close to Vulkan and respected Rogal Dorn. He had little patience for the vanity of brothers like Fulgrim.

Isstvan V

The Raven Guard were one of the three loyal Legions in the first wave at Isstvan V. When the traitors closed the trap, they were almost wiped out. In the chaos, Corax fought Lorgar and nearly killed him, but Konrad Curze intervened. Corax escaped with only a few thousand sons from a Legion of tens of thousands, carried off the planet by the few ships that could reach them.

Rebuilding the Legion

Desperate to rebuild, Corax went to Terra. The Emperor gave him access to the secrets of the Primarch project so he could make new Raven Guard quickly. It went wrong. The process was rushed and flawed, and many of the warriors it created mutated into monsters, the so-called Raptors. At the same time, the Alpha Legion launched a secret war against Deliverance, hunting the Raven Guard and their new recruits. These events are told in Deliverance Lost.

The Siege and after

Corax and the surviving Raven Guard fought on through the rest of the Heresy and helped defend the Imperium in its final days. After the war, Corax was eaten up by guilt over the monsters his work had created. He was never the same. In the end, he flew into the Eye of Terror alone, never to be seen again. Legend says his last word was "Nevermore".

The Raven Guard today

The Raven Guard still fight as their father taught them: hidden, fast and deadly. They use jump packs and Vanguard Veterans, and strike from the shadows. Their most famous hero is Kayvaan Shrike, a master of guerrilla warfare who later became their Chapter Master. The Chapter's warriors have unusually pale skin and dark eyes, a sign of their Primarch's gene-seed.

Personality and brothers

Corax was quiet, thoughtful and fiercely protective of the weak. He hated slavery and tyranny of any kind. He loved his sons, which is why the losses at Isstvan V almost broke him. He grieved for Ferrus Manus, feared what Curze had become, and never forgave Lorgar or Alpharius.
