This is the last part of our Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader walkthrough. It covers Chapter 5, from your arrival in the Necron system to the final quest, To Walk Bravely First into Darkness, and the Epilogue. We keep this page lighter on story so we don't spoil the ending.

Before you start Chapter 5

You came through the dimensional gate chasing Lord Inquisitor Calcazar, and now you are deep in Necron territory. Chapter 5 is shorter than the middle chapters. It is about using everything you built up, not finding a new hub.

  • Your party should be close to its final form. Respec any companion who never quite worked.
  • Your allies from Chapter 4, such as House Winterscale or House Chorda, may or may not be with you, based on your earlier choices.
  • Make a hard save in a new slot now. You will want it.

Exploring the system: the hunt for Calcazar

You start in open space. Your job is to explore the planets and stars of the system until you find traces of Calcazar.

  1. Scan and visit each planet on the system map. Some hold story clues, some hold loot, and some hold hard fights.
  2. Follow the clues to Calcazar's trail. Each step opens the next location.
  3. Expect more space combat too. Keep your voidship's repairs and upgrades up to date.

If Ulfar is with you, this is also where his story pays off. The Missing Space Wolves location ties into his companion quest.

Fighting Necrons

Necrons are the main enemy of this chapter, and they fight very differently from cultists or Drukhari.

  • They are tough. Use weapons that punch through armour, and focus fire on one target at a time.
  • Don't spread damage. Finishing enemies matters more than ever, because kills feed your Momentum.
  • Use cover. Check line of sight before you move, and don't leave anyone standing in the open at the end of a turn.
  • Officer extra turns are your best tool. Two turns for your top damage dealer can end a fight early.
  • Psykers and debuffs help a lot. Weaken the big targets before your heavy hitters go in.

The boss gauntlet

Guides describe the end of Chapter 5 as a gauntlet of bosses: several hard fights in a row with little room to rest. We won't name them all to keep the ending fresh, but the same rules apply to each one:

  1. Save before every fight, in a new slot.
  2. Read the boss tooltip and its abilities before you act. Owlcat bosses usually have one mechanic that matters most.
  3. Clear or block the adds first if they heal or shield the boss.
  4. Save your Heroic Acts for the moment the boss is open to damage.
  5. If you are stuck, lower the difficulty for that fight only. The game allows it, and the story is worth seeing.

Final quest: To Walk Bravely First into Darkness

To Walk Bravely First into Darkness is the last main quest. It leads you to the end of the game, and once you start it there is no going back to finish other things.

  • Finish any side quests and companion quests you care about before you start it.
  • Your conviction path (Dogmatic, Iconoclast or Heretical) and many earlier choices shape the dialogue options and outcomes here.
  • Some endings depend on what happened with Calcazar and who survived. Read every option carefully.

The Epilogue

After the final quest, the Epilogue plays out as a series of slides. They tell you what happened to:

  • your Rogue Trader and your dynasty,
  • each companion, based on their quests and your relationship with them,
  • the worlds and people of the Koronus Expanse you met along the way, including the ones you reclaimed in Chapter 2.

This is where choices from all the way back in Chapter 1, like Rykad Minoris, come back. It is a good reason to play again on a different path.

DLC: what comes after

The main story ends here, but the game has paid DLC that adds more:

  • Void Shadows (September 2024) adds new story content and a fifth starting archetype, the Bladedancer, a melee specialist.
  • Lex Imperialis (June 2025) and The Infinite Museion (June 2026) followed with more story content.

If you are planning a second run, it is a good moment to add one of them.

Tips for this part

  • Keep at least one save from before the final quest, so you can see other endings without replaying the whole game.
  • Don't hoard consumables. Use your best grenades, stims and buffs in the boss gauntlet.
  • Bring your strongest party, not your favourite. You can be sentimental on the next run.
  • Talk to every companion one last time before the final quest, and check that no companion quest is left half done.

My take

The last stretch of Rogue Trader is hard, and the boss gauntlet nearly broke my party. But the Epilogue made it worth it: seeing every choice paid off, good and bad, is what Owlcat does best. Which conviction path did you finish on, and would you play another one?

FAQ

How long is Rogue Trader in total?

It is a very long RPG. Expect many dozens of hours for the main story with some side content, and a lot more if you explore everything.

What is the final quest in Rogue Trader?

It is called To Walk Bravely First into Darkness. It starts near the end of Chapter 5 and leads to the Epilogue.

What decides my ending?

Your conviction path, your companions' quests and your big choices across all five chapters. The Epilogue slides show the results. Keep a save from before the final quest if you want to try other choices.

Do I need the DLC to finish the game?

No. The main story is complete without it. Void Shadows and the later DLC add extra content and options.
