Part 3 of our Diablo 2 walkthrough covers Act 3, from the Kurast Docks through the jungle and the ruined city to Mephisto in the Durance of Hate. This act has two of the best permanent rewards in the game, so don't skip the side quests.

Quests in Act 3
- The Golden Bird
- Blade of the Old Religion
- Khalim's Will
- Lam Esen's Tome
- The Blackened Temple
- The Guardian
Khalim's Will, The Blackened Temple and The Guardian are needed to finish the act. The Golden Bird and Lam Esen's Tome are optional but give permanent life and stat points, so do them.
The route through Act 3
The act is one long path: Kurast Docks, Spider Forest, Great Marsh, Flayer Jungle, Lower Kurast, Kurast Bazaar, Upper Kurast, Kurast Causeway and Travincal. The Durance of Hate is under Travincal. Most quests are picked up along the way.
1. The Golden Bird
At some point in Act 3, a unique or champion monster drops a Jade Figurine. You don't need to hunt for it. It usually shows up while you play through the jungle.
- Give the figurine to Meshif. He trades it for a Golden Bird.
- Show the bird to Deckard Cain, then take it to Alkor.
- Alkor makes you a Potion of Life. Drink it.
Reward: +20 maximum life, permanently. Easy and always worth it.
2. Blade of the Old Religion
Hratli asks you to find the Gidbinn, an old dagger.
- Go through the Spider Forest (and the Great Marsh, if your map routes you that way) to the Flayer Jungle.
- Find the Gidbinn altar in the Flayer Jungle. A group of Fetishes guards it.
- Click the altar, kill the guards and pick up the Gidbinn.
- Take it to Ormus.
Reward: Ormus gives you a ring, and Asheara lets you hire one Iron Wolf mercenary for free. The ring can be very useful at this stage.
3. Khalim's Will (part one: the relics)
Cain tells you that the High Council is under Mephisto's control. To break into his lair you need Khalim's Will, made from four relics of a dead hero.
- Khalim's Eye: in a chest in the Spider Cavern, a cave in the Spider Forest.
- Khalim's Brain: in a chest on Level 3 of the Flayer Dungeon, a cave in the Flayer Jungle.
- Khalim's Heart: in a chest on Level 2 of the Sewers, entered from the Kurast Bazaar. The stairs to Level 2 are blocked until you pull the lever right next to them. The unique Icehawk Riftwing guards that spot.
- Khalim's Flail: dropped by the High Council in Travincal (see below).
4. Lam Esen's Tome
When you reach the Kurast Bazaar, Alkor gives you this quest. The book is in one of the small temples in the Bazaar, Upper Kurast or the Causeway.
- Enter each temple you pass. They are small one-room dungeons.
- The book sits on a stand in one of them. Kill the guards and pick it up.
- Take it to Alkor.
Reward: 5 stat points. Always do it.
Waypoints worth grabbing
- Spider Forest (the Eye), Great Marsh and Flayer Jungle (the Gidbinn and the Brain).
- Lower Kurast, Kurast Bazaar (the Heart and the temples) and Upper Kurast.
- Travincal and Durance of Hate Level 2 (your start point for Mephisto).
5. The Blackened Temple (the High Council)
Travincal is the big temple square. The High Council, three strong unique Council Members and their packs, guard the temple steps.
- They cast Hydra fire heads and hit hard in melee. Fire resistance helps a lot.
- Pull small groups toward you instead of running into the middle.
- When all three die, The Blackened Temple completes and one of them drops Khalim's Flail.
Khalim's Will (part two: the Compelling Orb)
- Put the Eye, Brain, Heart and Flail into the Horadric Cube and Transmute. You get Khalim's Will.
- Equip it as your weapon.
- Walk into the temple in Travincal and hit the glowing Compelling Orb with it.
- The orb shatters and the stairs to the Durance of Hate open.
Remember to switch back to your real weapon afterwards.
6. The Guardian (Mephisto)
The Durance of Hate has three levels. Grab the Level 2 waypoint, then find the stairs to Level 3. Mephisto waits there near a moat, with more Council Members nearby.
Watch out: on Level 2 you meet Stygian Dolls. They explode for big damage when they die. Fight them from range or let your merc go first.
What Mephisto does
- He casts elemental spells from range. His lightning is the attack that kills most players, so treat it seriously.
- He also uses cold and poison attacks, and hits in melee if you stand next to him.
- The Council Members on Level 3 add Hydras and melee damage if you pull them in too.
How to beat him
- Raise lightning resistance first, then fire and cold.
- Clear the Council Members near his platform one group at a time before you go for him.
- Melee: stand close and hit hard. Fewer of his spells hit you when you stay in his face.
- Ranged: use the moat trick if you can teleport. Draw him to the edge of the moat, then cross. He gets stuck on the other side while you hit him. A mercenary tends to break this, so it works best when your merc is dead or far away.
- Many players kill him on Normal at level 25 to 30.
Mephisto drops his Soulstone. Pick it up, you need it in Act 4. A bridge appears over the blood, and a red portal at the end leads to the Pandemonium Fortress.

Tips for this part
- Act 3 jungles are wide and confusing. Hug one edge of the map and you will find the exits faster.
- Fetish packs in the Flayer Jungle swarm fast. Fight them in a narrow spot.
- Pick up the free Iron Wolf only if you play a caster who wants a spell-casting merc. Many players keep their Act 2 merc.
- Don't forget to read Lam Esen's Tome and drink the Potion of Life. Both are easy to leave in your bag by mistake.
My take
Act 3 is the act I like least on a first run, the jungle maps feel endless and you can get lost easily. It is still worth slowing down for the +20 life and 5 stat points, because you will feel those all game. Travincal is a great place to test your build before Mephisto. How many times did you get lost in the Flayer Jungle?
FAQ
How long is Act 3 in Diablo 2?
On a first run, roughly three to five hours with all quests. Big jungle maps and four relics to collect make it one of the longer acts.
What level should I be for Mephisto?
Around level 25 to 30 on Normal is common. Lightning resistance matters more than raw level.
Where is Khalim's Heart?
In a chest on Sewers Level 2, which you enter from the Kurast Bazaar. Pull the lever next to the blocked stairs on Level 1 to open the path down.
Do I have to do Lam Esen's Tome?
No, it is optional, but it gives 5 permanent stat points on each difficulty. That is too good to skip.
