Shopping for a gamer this holiday season? Here are gift ideas that gamers actually use, sorted by platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and, because it's my own hobby, Warhammer. Each section has quick links so you can compare prices on Amazon. Tip: if you don't know their exact setup, a gift card or an accessory that works everywhere is the safe pick.

For PlayStation 5 players
- GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, just in time for the holidays. It's the obvious big gift this year. More in our GTA 6 launch checklist.
- A second DualSense controller, so they can play with friends or swap while one charges.
- An M.2 SSD with a heatsink: big games fill a PS5 fast, and GTA 6 is reportedly around 210GB. Internal M.2 drives can run PS5 games; external USB drives can only store them.
- A charging station for two controllers.

For Xbox players
- GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S, also out November 19.
- An Xbox Wireless Controller in a fun colour.
- Xbox Game Pass or an Xbox gift card, so they can pick their own games.
- A storage expansion card for Series X|S, the only way to add fast storage that runs Series X|S games.

For PC gamers
- A gaming headset: one of the most-used accessories, and it works with most consoles too.
- A mechanical keyboard or a lightweight wireless mouse.
- A big desk mat: cheap, useful, and it looks great on any setup.
- A Steam gift card, the safest choice if you don't know what they play. PC strategy fans might want Dawn of War IV, out December 3.
For Nintendo Switch 2 players
Buying the console itself? Nintendo sells two system bundles that include a full game download and a 3-month Nintendo Switch Online individual membership: Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World ($549.99 MSRP) and Nintendo Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort ($529.99 MSRP). Prices at retailers can differ, especially around Black Friday.

Already have one? These are the gifts every owner uses:
- A microSD Express card: Switch 2 needs the newer microSD Express type for expanding storage, not the regular microSD cards used by the original Switch.
- A carrying case and screen protector, the two accessories almost every owner ends up buying.
- A Pro Controller for longer sessions on the TV.
- A Nintendo eShop gift card.
For Warhammer fans
I collect Ultramarines myself, so here's what hobbyists are genuinely happy to unwrap:
- A Combat Patrol box: the best-value way to start or grow an army. Ask which faction they collect first.
- Citadel paints or a paint set: painters always run out of their favourite colours.
- Hobby tools: good clippers, a hobby knife and fine brushes make a real difference.
- A wet palette and a magnifying lamp for long painting sessions.
- Warhammer video games, like Space Marine 2, for when the brushes are put away.
Stocking stuffers
- Gift cards (PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Nintendo): always the right size.
- USB-C cables and a fast charger: every gamer needs more.
- LED light strips for a gaming setup.
- Controller grips or thumbstick caps.
My take
If you know their platform, GTA 6 is the gift of the year. If you don't, a headset, a gift card or (for hobbyists) paints and tools are hard to get wrong. I'll keep this guide updated through Black Friday and the holidays. What's on your own wishlist this year?
