What is the Fear and Greed Index?

It's a simple 0 to 100 score that tries to measure how nervous or excited the crypto market is. It looks at things like price swings, trading volume, social media mood and Bitcoin's share of the market. Below 25 is "Extreme Fear", above 75 is "Extreme Greed".

The swing over the last few months has been big: the index peaked at 82 during the August rally, cooled to 56 by mid-October, fell to 37 at the start of November and now sits at 25.

Why Bitcoin fell

  • A rough week for tech. Bitcoin has been trading closely with tech stocks. After the Nasdaq's 5% drop on November 5, Bitcoin fell to about $75,000 too. We covered that day in Nasdaq falls 5.5% into a correction.
  • A hot jobs report. October's US jobs report came in far stronger than expected (a reported 165,000 jobs against about 65,000 expected). Markets read that as a sign interest rates may stay higher for longer, which usually weighs on riskier assets like crypto.
  • Money leaving Bitcoin ETFs. The spot Bitcoin ETFs reportedly lost about $430 million on Thursday alone. When big funds sell, it adds pressure on the price.

What traders are watching

Most traders are watching the $75,000 area. Bitcoin dipped just under it on Friday and bounced, so it's acting as support for now. If it breaks clearly lower, the next levels people talk about are around $73,000. If it holds, a fearful market can also mean sellers are running out of steam.

One thing worth knowing: Extreme Fear readings have often shown up near short-term lows in the past, because that's when most of the nervous selling has already happened. It's not a guarantee of anything, though, and markets can stay fearful for weeks.

What it means for you

  • If you hold Bitcoin long term, weeks like this are part of the ride. Bitcoin has had many 20-30% pullbacks.
  • If you're thinking of buying, many people prefer small regular buys over trying to time the bottom.
  • Keep your coins safe: a hardware wallet keeps them offline and away from exchange hacks, which have been in the news a lot this year (see our 2026 crypto hacks tracker).

My take

Extreme Fear always feels worse than it is in the moment. Bitcoin is down from its highs, but it's holding the $75,000 area for now, and the mood swung from greed to fear in just a few weeks. Are you buying the dip, holding, or staying out until things calm down?
