Part 2 of our Terraria walkthrough covers the last pre-Hardmode boss, the Wall of Flesh, and your first steps in Hardmode. It starts with gearing up in the Underworld and ends when you have Hardmode ore armor, wings and a plan for the mechanical bosses.

Part 4Lunatic Cultist, the four Celestial Pillars, Moon Lord, what comes after

Step 1: gear up with Hellstone

The Underworld is the lava layer at the very bottom of the world. You need a strong pickaxe to mine Hellstone there: the Nightmare Pickaxe (Demonite) or Deathbringer Pickaxe (Crimtane) works.

  1. Drink an Obsidian Skin Potion so lava doesn't kill you. Bring several.
  2. Mine Hellstone and smelt it with Obsidian into Hellstone Bars at a Hellforge (found in the Underworld's ruined houses).
  3. Craft Molten armor for melee, or use the bars for weapons.
  4. Also craft the Molten Pickaxe. You need it to mine the first Hardmode ores later.

Common pre-Wall gear by class, as most guides suggest:

  • Melee: Molten armor and the Night's Edge (made from the evil sword, Muramasa, Blade of Grass and Fiery Greatsword).
  • Ranged: Necro or Molten armor, the Minishark or Phoenix Blaster, or the Molten Fury bow with Hellfire Arrows.
  • Magic: Jungle or Meteor armor, Water Bolt, Demon Scythe or Space Gun.
  • Summoner: Bee armor and the Imp Staff (Hellstone) or Hornet Staff.

Step 2: build the Hellbridge

The Wall of Flesh moves across the whole Underworld from one side to the other, and you can't stop it. If you're blocked by terrain, you die.

  • Build a long flat bridge across the Underworld, at least a few hundred blocks. Many players use Obsidian or another block lava can't melt.
  • Remove ash and hills above the bridge so nothing stops you.
  • Place a Campfire and Heart Lantern near the start if you can.

Step 3: summon the Wall of Flesh

You need a Guide Voodoo Doll. It drops from Voodoo Demons, the flying demons that carry the doll in the Underworld. Kill one over solid ground, not over lava, or the doll will burn and summon the boss right away.

When you're ready, throw the doll into lava in the Underworld while the Guide is alive. The Guide dies and the Wall appears. He comes back later, so don't worry. The Wall comes from the side closer to where the doll fell.

The Wall of Flesh fight

  1. Run away from the Wall along your bridge while shooting back. It speeds up as it loses health.
  2. Its eyes fire lasers and its mouth spawns The Hungry, which lunge at you on vines. Kill them or keep moving.
  3. Its Leeches crawl toward you. Piercing weapons and minions handle them well.
  4. If you touch the Wall or fall off the bridge, you're pulled in. Don't let it catch you.

Use Ironskin, Regeneration, Swiftness and Archery or Magic Power potions if you have them. The Phoenix Blaster, Molten Fury, Water Bolt, Demon Scythe and the Imp Staff are all common picks for this fight.

Drops worth using:

  • Pwnhammer: lets you break altars. This is the key to Hardmode ores.
  • One emblem: Warrior, Ranger, Sorcerer or Summoner Emblem (more damage for that class).
  • One weapon: Breaker Blade, Clockwork Assault Rifle, Laser Rifle or the Firecracker whip.
  • In Expert mode, the Demon Heart gives you an extra accessory slot.

What changes in Hardmode

  • Two new stripes of Hallow and Corruption or Crimson spread across the world in a big V shape. They grow over time.
  • Enemies everywhere get much stronger. Your old armor won't keep up.
  • New NPCs: the Wizard (tied up in the caverns), the Truffle (lives in a house in a surface Glowing Mushroom biome) and the Tax Collector (purify a Tortured Soul in the Underworld). After any mechanical boss, the Steampunker moves in.
  • New events: the Pirate Invasion (from a Pirate Map) brings the Pirate NPC. The Solar Eclipse can also happen now.

Step 4: smash altars for Hardmode ore

Every altar you break with the Pwnhammer adds new ore to the world. Ores come in tiers, and each world has one ore from each pair:

  1. Cobalt or Palladium (mine with the Molten Pickaxe).
  2. Mythril or Orichalcum (needs a Cobalt or Palladium pickaxe).
  3. Adamantite or Titanium (needs a Mythril or Orichalcum pickaxe).

Breaking altars also spawns Wraiths, so have a weapon ready. Make a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil and an Adamantite or Titanium Forge as soon as you can; later recipes need them.

Step 5: Souls, wings and early Hardmode gear

  • Souls of Light drop in the underground Hallow and Souls of Night in the underground Corruption or Crimson. You need both for the mechanical boss summons.
  • Souls of Flight come from Wyverns in the sky. With feathers from Harpies they make your first wings. Wings make every Hardmode fight easier.
  • Spider armor (Spider Fangs from spider caves) is a classic early summoner set, with the Spider Staff.
  • Strong early Hardmode weapons include the Clockwork Assault Rifle, Daedalus Stormbow, Crystal Storm, Golden Shower or Cursed Flames, and Mythril or Adamantite swords.

Queen Slime (optional)

Find a Gelatin Crystal growing in the underground Hallow and use it anywhere in the Hallow. It won't work outside it.

  • She jumps, slams down and fires crystal shards. In phase 2 she flies and slams from above.
  • Fight her on platforms and stay mobile. Wings help a lot.
  • Drops worth using: the Blade Staff (a strong summon at this stage) and the Gelatinous Pillion mount.

Tips for this part

  • Save a backup of your world before the Wall of Flesh if you care about your build. Hardmode spreads fast.
  • Kill Voodoo Demons over solid ground so the doll doesn't fall into lava by accident.
  • Don't break every altar on the first night. Each one spawns a Wraith, and the ore is waiting.
  • Get wings before you summon a mechanical boss. They are worth more than a better sword.
  • Stop the evil and Hallow from reaching your town with a few gaps of non-spreading blocks.

My take

I love the moment the Wall dies and the "spirits of light and dark" message pops up. It feels like a brand new game. The trick is to slow down after that and gear up before you try anything big. What was your first Hardmode weapon?

FAQ

How do you summon the Wall of Flesh?

Get a Guide Voodoo Doll from Voodoo Demons in the Underworld, then throw it into Underworld lava while the Guide is alive.

What gear should I have for the Wall of Flesh?

Molten armor or a full class set, a strong pre-Hardmode weapon like the Phoenix Blaster, Molten Fury, Water Bolt or Imp Staff, and a long bridge across the Underworld.

Can you undo Hardmode?

No. Once the Wall of Flesh dies, that world is in Hardmode for good. Back up your world file first if you want a copy.

Why can't I mine Cobalt or Palladium?

You need a pickaxe strong enough, like the Molten Pickaxe. You also need to break altars with the Pwnhammer for ore to appear.
