Ripple now has a federally supervised bank. On October 26, the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) gave final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank, ten months after a conditional green light. It's a big regulatory win for Ripple and its RLUSD stablecoin. Here's what the bank can and can't do, and what it means for XRP.

This is news, not financial advice. Crypto prices can move fast in both directions.

What happened

  • July 2025: Ripple applied for a national trust bank charter.
  • December 2025: the OCC gave conditional approval, alongside Circle and other crypto firms.
  • October 26, 2026: the OCC granted final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank, according to Ripple's announcement.

The OCC is the US regulator that charters and supervises national banks. A national trust bank charter puts Ripple under federal supervision.

What the bank can do

  • Manage the reserves behind RLUSD, Ripple's US dollar stablecoin, keeping them segregated.
  • Act as collateral trustee of those reserves for RLUSD holders.
  • Offer fiduciary digital asset custody, holding crypto for clients.

What it can't do

  • It can't take deposits, offer checking or savings accounts, or provide FDIC insurance. A national trust bank is limited to fiduciary services.
  • It doesn't issue RLUSD. The stablecoin is still issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple's New York-regulated trust company. The new bank adds federal oversight of the reserves.

Ripple says it will keep working with the OCC, New York's Department of Financial Services and other regulators as the bank moves toward opening.

What about XRP?

The bank is mainly about RLUSD and custody, not XRP directly. Any benefit to XRP is indirect: more trust in RLUSD could mean more activity on the XRP Ledger, where RLUSD also runs. Early market reaction was muted, according to reports. Some analysts also point out that the charter is limited, with no deposits and no lending, so it shouldn't be read as Ripple "becoming a bank" in the everyday sense.

My take

This is a real milestone. A crypto company getting final approval from a federal bank regulator would have sounded impossible a few years ago. For stablecoin users it's good news: federal oversight of the reserves makes RLUSD easier to trust. But it's not a magic button for the XRP price, and anyone posting "XRP to the moon because Ripple is a bank now" is overselling it. Do you think federal charters will make stablecoins mainstream?
