How it compares
The Atlas 8's main rival is MSI's Claw 8 EX AI+, which uses the same Arc G3 Extreme chip and costs about $500 more, according to TweakTown and Windows Central. Windows Central, which tried both at Computex, says the lower price comes with some trade-offs, so it's worth waiting for full reviews if you're torn. The other big names in Windows handhelds are the ROG Xbox Ally line, and on the Linux side, Valve's Steam Deck.

One thing to keep in mind with 512GB of storage: big games fill it fast. A fast microSD card or a larger SSD is worth planning for.
My take
$1,299 is a lot for a handheld, but undercutting MSI by $500 with the same chip makes the Atlas 8 the most interesting Intel handheld so far. If the reviews are good, it'll be hard to find this holiday season. Would you pay $1,300 for a handheld, or stick with a console?
